Kalmanovitz Carpet Replacement Refresh

Beginning Monday, October 26, the Kalmanovitz Library will undergo carpet replacement as part of UCSF Facilities Services’ 25-Year Renewal program. The project is part of ongoing efforts to refresh and improve library spaces, including restoring and reupholstering original furniture throughout study areas.

The carpet replacement will occur in phases from October 26, 2026, through January 26, 2027, with work progressing by floor throughout the building.

What to expect

The Kalmanovitz Library will remain open and operational for the UCSF community and public throughout the project. Individual floors and study areas will temporarily close as work progresses on each level.

  • The third floor (main floor) which includes the Library Services Desk and Caffé Central, will remain open. UCSF ID holders will continue to have 24/7 access to the third floor.
  • Other library services, including multimedia equipment loans, the recording studio, the Makers Lab, and archival research services, will remain available by appointment.
  • Some library materials may be temporarily inaccessible during the project. Patrons can request materials from affected areas through UCSF Library’s hold request or interlibrary loan services.

A refreshed library

Upon completion, the new carpet will complement the library’s beautifully refurbished and reupholstered furniture. The furniture work restores many of the library’s original pieces rather than replacing them.

Thank you to UCSF and the broader community for your patience and flexibility as we complete these improvements. For questions about the project or building access, contact Deputy University Librarian, Micquel Little.
