Furniture Refreshed at the FAMRI Library

This spring, the FAMRI Library at Mission Bay and the adjoining classroom have undergone interior refreshes. Upgrades to the main area support a more flexible, welcoming space for UCSF affiliates to study, collaborate, and learn. The refreshed classroom space will support Library classes and workshops.

History of the name

The library space on the first floor of the William J. Rutter Center (formerly the Community Center) opened on October 24, 2005, and featured a computer lab/classroom equipped with 16 computers. In February 2008, the university honored the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute (FAMRI) by dedicating the library space to the board of trustees. A class action lawsuit brought against the tobacco industry on behalf of non‑smoking flight attendants in 1991 established the FAMRI as part of its settlement. The Flight Attendant Medical Research Foundation sponsors scientific and medical research aimed at detecting and curing ailments caused by exposure to tobacco smoke, including several important UCSF programs and initiatives.

Improvements

The improvements make it is easier for UCSF community members to meet, attend workshops, or focus on individual work. The Committee on Library and Scholarly Communication (COLASC) funded the classroom’s technology updates, and the UCSF Library provided additional support, positioning the spaces to effectively support Library instruction, consultations, and events.

What’s new in the space

  • Flexible, modern furniture that supports group work, conversations with colleagues, or solo study

  • An updated classroom (CC-151) designed for both hybrid and in-person Library classes and workshops – so that both remote and in person attendees will have the same high-quality experience.
  • A new consultation room (CC-156) where Library staff will hold in-person research consultations with library users.

We’re excited to welcome the UCSF community to the refreshed FAMRI Library. Stop by to study, meet with colleagues, or attend an upcoming Library workshop or event. While this space caters to collaborative conversation and work, those seeking a quiet study space are encouraged to go to the Hideout in Mission Hall.

Join us

We look forward to welcoming the UCSF community to our first in-person events in the newly refreshed space for the AI Summer Discussion Club. Join us for snacks and lively conversation from 3 – 4 p.m. in the main space of the FAMRI Library.

Stay tuned for more in-person and hybrid events later this summer and fall!
