UCSF Print News Preserved and Digitized Through California Revealed

Before the advent of the internet, social media, and email, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) relied on print newsletters and employee newspapers to disseminate news across campus and to local neighborhoods. As Eric Brooks, former senior digital editor, reflected in a 2024 UCSF news article, There Was No Other Way: How UCSF Got Its News Three Decades Ago, these publications carried essential information about new research programs, community health initiatives, and daily life at the university. They also helped connect faculty, staff, and learners across distributed clinics, campuses, and San Francisco neighborhoods.

Thanks to generous support from California Revealed, a state-wide initiative to digitize, preserve, and provide online access to materials documenting California’s history, art, and culture, UCSF Archives and Special Collections now offers expanded digital access to more than 4,600 pages of UCSF newspapers, newsletters, and health publications, dated 1967 to 1999. From stories on groundbreaking scientific breakthroughs to practical campus updates and community events, these newly digitized publications show how UCSF has historically communicated its mission to advance health worldwide through public service, pioneering research, and education.
