UCSF 3D Printed Face Shield Project Recap

The UCSF 3D printed face shield project began on April 1 and concluded on May 14, 2020. During this time, a portion of the UCSF Library was converted into a production center to manufacture face shields for the UCSF hospital in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Below is a recap of the project:

tile reading 21 3D printers used, 31 days of production, 5,241 face shields printed, 3,319 face shields donated, 8,560 total face shields

The face shield project was a collaboration between the following groups:

  • UCSF ORIF (Organized, Rapid, Intelligent Fabrication) team
  • UCSF Clinical Engineering
  • UCSF Library Makers Lab
  • UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
  • UCSF Center for Advanced 3D+ Technologies (CA3D+)
  • UCSF Documents & Media
  • San Francisco VA
  • Humanmade

The project would not have been possible without the help of volunteers from across the UCSF community. A key component of production was smoothing and sanitizing the face shields, which required many hours of volunteer time. The Library and Makers Lab would like to thank the following volunteers who generously donated their time and expertise supporting the project.
