This report.de3ls with results obtained by the au th ur s during the last 10 'years in chronic inhalation akperinunts with cigarette smoke carried out on CF- and on Snell's mice, using two different model systems. 1 - 1. Chronic exposure or qrouva of CF mice to contiruous aged whole cigarette smoke in a smoke filled chamber. 2. Chronic exposure of individual Snellts mice in rontainers to pufra of -fr*esh whole cigarette smoke or ite gas phase, alt,3rnating witi, rrosh air, imitating as closely as possible the human habit or cigarette smoking. Chronic exposure of cr mice to aged whole cigaretto smukr., I did not show a stati sLiC311Y sign if icant increase or pul.-norizziry tumors, when compared with cant rals, in mice at 19-2P months (,f bus. However, a soriewhat, earlirzr appearanco of pulmonaLy tumozs, was noted in the experimental gruups. Chronic axposure of male and fFimale Snell's mice to puffs or fresh wholu cig-irette smake or to the gas phase resulted in a significant incrs~jse in frequency of mice with pulmuniry tum(irs, especiully.of adenocarcincincs, when comparud with co-itrols, where- by the effect was more pronouncod after exposure to the gas ph-se than brter exposure to whole smoke. Comparison of frequencies between males and females ruv-,i.L- a greater increase of adeno- carcinomas in males than in females, while fainales showud a great~er increase of adanomns th.;n the males, after inhalation of ciqzirutte smuku. While the data suggcot that pulmonary carcinogenE33is in Snell's mice is enhanced after inholation,of whole fresh cigazette smoke or its gas phase, the differences in frequency betweer. tu-nc,r in males and females support the. concept that horman-il faLtors are alqo involved. In cr Imine, pulmonary tumors were observed at ages less titan. 12 months, while in Snallta micu, pulmonary tumors were observed in controls onlv efLar In months or agog nnd in exposed mico after 15 Months of zg~. Histologically the pulmonary tumors were adenomas, and adendcarcinomas. No ca-.u of bronchugenic spidermuid luita cance- was found either in CF or Snell's controls, or in cr l ar Snel L's. mice exposed to chroniA inhalation of ciger.ette $M'ake.
