Dr. hariLe has measured the concentration o1 nicotine, aldehydes, acrolein and carl>on monoxide resultinF_ from cigarettes smoked in unventilated rooms of 38 and 170 cubic metres. The cigarettes were machine smoked and the values compared with the maximum acceptable concentration (MAK) of the various chemical compounds whiph-are applicable in Germany. In the small-r room (1c; sq. m.) the W vRlues were- exceeded only when 30 cigarettes were smoked in 13 minutes. In the bigger room the values w-ere e-xceeded only when 150 cigarettes were smoked in 32-34 minutes. An example from the actual results shows the MAK were not reached when 11 smokers smoked 108 cigarettes in the larger unventilated room within 2 hours.. He 4=cludes that the problem of air pollution by cigarette smdker6 may be solved by adequate ventilation. E.J. G RM 302059049 BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 19 April 1999
