Wednesday, 12th September Joint Meeting of Tecbnology Group-and Smoke Study Group. It was proposed at the last meeting of the Scientific Commission that the Technology and Smoke Study Groups should study the questiou of tobacco damage by insects, althou&4 the Agronomy and Phytopatbology.Groupg will be mainly concerned. A questionnaire will be circulated and the answers collated. ..Artho outlined the-programme of the Montreux meeting- (22nd--27th September,- 1914). Invitations should -be expected by October, and replies asked for by December 31st. -T46 unn6uncemenis were made on behalf of Ray; 00 The Council-had accepted several now memV'ers and these may nominiLte membcsrs for the'Vorking Groups. Report on Cigar Sub-Group (van der Straeten) The report (Appendix III) was accepted, and Gottscho will give a summary at the Tobacco Chemists' Research_ Conference i-a October, 1973. In answer to a question from Elmenhorst, van der Straeten confirmed that it was intended, after discussion at the Sciedtific Coftimiggion, to publish the amoking.regime as a .CORESTA-recomended method. The text would be ready in two months. 1-.1. Cigar Research Council. Hiekson had sUggested that the C.R.C. should- become an Associate of CORESTA. Problems Related to Pesticides Gaisch stated that he would Like to relinquish the job of Chairman. Elmenhorst announced that Miss Ayers would be willing to stand as Chairman. It was agreed that the Sub-Group should elect their own Chairman and, if they wished to, a Secretary - i.e. the Smoke Study Group should not impose a new Chairman. C.I. Ayres made it clear that B-A.T. would welcome Gaisch conti-nuing. as-Chair an- and, whilst not definite, it is probable that he will do so. 4. CORESTA Standard Methods It was agreed that, in future, these would be knorn as CORESTA Recommended Methods. 4.1. Vapour Phase Components (SEITA) Joigny proposed -that recoftended methods. thould be produced for carbon monoxide,.acrolein and H_QX .(presumably so that*Gallia can be urged alongl). Elmenhorst proposed that a task force should be set up not to produce recommended methods but to accumulate inf ormation- on methodology and make a report in 1974. On a hand vote, 15 were for the proposal and 9 against.. - Complaints-were then made that some "observers" had voted and that many delegates kad failed to *express an opinion. The following morning a written vote was taken: 24 were for the proposal-, 16 against and 1 spoilt: paper (C. 1. Ayres voted for the proposal). Modifying Smoking Standards (141usemann) HtLusermann proposed that the butt length used in CORESTA methods should be changed to "tipping + 41mm", as shown in Appendix VI. Many people, including C.I. Ayres,.were caught short by this one,.and were not clear how it affected their own brands. Bome companiet ehtige their dolegat-es too frequently. There is a threat of an invasion by "commercial" rather than "scientific" delegates. Not enough delegates are willing to take part in the collaborative experimental work." Hayn had apparently suggested that any delegates who have not Shown active interest for two years should be deleted from the mailing list. It'was'agreed that the- Chairman and Secretary, together with the S.C. members, should consider whether. they are happy with the Smoke Study Group and,-if necessary, tpake recommendations at -the next meeting. lie W.. ..... 6.
