PESTICIDE RESIDUE LEVELS ON AUSTRALIAN-MADE CIGARETTES AND AUSTRALL6.21-GROWN TOBACCO - 4TH SURVEY (Report No. R.D.1660 Restricted) SUMKARY The levels of dithiocarbamate and organochlorine pesticide residues on ten samples of tobacco from the 1978 Australian crop, and six brands of Australian-made cigarettes, two brands from each of the three major manufacturers, have been determined. The level of dithiocarbamate residues on all of the North Queensland tobaccos and on the Victorian Burley samples is much higher for the 1978 crop than for 1977 crop. Victorian flue-cured tobaccost however, show little change. Of the Australian cigarettes analysed, only Winfield shows a significant increase compared with 1977. Levels on both AMATIL brands and on Peter Stuyvesant are unchanged and there has been a large reduction on both of the Philip Morris brands in 1978. In general there has been a large decrease in the level of organo- chlorine pesticides found on the 1978 Australian crop although, even now, levels remain much higher than those found on tobaccos from the other major growing areas. Exceptions to this general reduction are endrin on all samples together with d'-" nsland tobaccos which show CD CD 00 t-1-4 L-n BATCO document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 23 April 1999 Group Research & Development Centre, British-American Tobacco Co. PESTICIDE RESIDUE LEVELS ON AUSTRALIAN-MADE CIGARETTES AND AUSTRALIAIN-GROWN TOBACCO - 4TH SURVEY (Report No. R.D.l6b0 Restricted) SUMMARY The levels of dithiocarbamate and organochlorine pesticide residues on ten samples of tobacco from the 1978 Australian crop, and six brands of Australian-made cigarettes, two brands from each of the three major manufacturers, have been determined. The cigarette brands analysed show some interesting differences. The levels of'DDT type pesticides on AMATIL brands in 1978 are only about one third of the level found in 1977. For Philip Morris brands it is about half the 1977 figure, whereas for Rothmans brands the reduction is much smaller, only about 25Z. Whilst dieldrin levels on ARDATH and the two Rothman brands has not changed significantly between 1977 and 1978, BENSON & HEDGES and the two Philip Morris brands have at least twice the 1977 level in 1978. This might indicate that Rothmans are using significantly different tobaccos from AHATIL and Philip Morris. AMATIL brands differ from those of the other two manufacturers in' having higher endrin and endosulfan levels in 1978 than in 1977. Winfield has a lower c-ndrin level in 1978 but otherwise levels of endrin and endosulfan on cigarettes are unchanged. For the first time since surveys of pesticide residues on Australian tobacco started in 1972, a general trend to lower levels has been found, although there are still several exceptions, the most significant being the increase in dithiocarbamate residue levels. Levels of almost all pesticide residues found on both the Australian tobaccos and cigarettes would be above the level permitted by the recently introduced German legislation. Note: 1977 refers to tobacco and cigarette samples analysed in the 3rd survey. 1978 refers to tobacco and cigarette samples analysed in the 4th survey.
