This trend is excellent nows . We Vall e building on this in our Health Strategy, which aims to reduce smoking by a third by the turn of the century. "Only three in'ton adults are now regular smokers. Those who have had the good sense and determination to stop smoking during this period will already have reduced their risk of heart disease. And in the longer term, their risk of contracting cancer will also drop almost back to that of a lifelong non-amokar. ,I remain concerned, however, that women are not stopping smoking in the same numbers as men. Women carry articular risks from the smoking habit, not least because smoking in pregnancy can damage the unborn baby. -That i1twhy we have given a special emphasis to women's sookirig in our hoa h education campaigns and I hope this will soon start to show up in the statistics. We also need to ensure that the health education message gets through to the less well-off who are smoking more than other groups. "We will be considering the implications of these figures very -efully in the next few weeks, along with the responses to our car consultative 'paper 'The Health of the Nation', many of which have drawn attention to the need further to reduce smoking.
