C~, 01 BATCo document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 14 April 1999 Projects: FELT and HINIC Project: FELT It is believed that in many markets there are a significant number of full flavour smokers who would like to switch to low tar products but cannot move since existing low tar products do not provide a required level of sensory intensity. The task of FELT is to - (a) discover practica routes to the enhancement of sensory characteristics of 9 mg PMWNF products, and, having identified these (b) use this information to find design routes to match specific full flavour (12-14 mg PMWNF) products Initially, six diff~erent design elements were evaluated individually; based upon this study, the use of - (a) alkaline filters (b) higher levels of expanded tobacco (c) incorporation of high nicotine grades were deemed to be the most successful approaches. B&H Special Filter (Gallahers, U.K. market) was chosen as target. A number of design routes were evaluated which comprised - (a-c) above, plus (d) Burley modification to the blend and (e) reduced stem content, in various combinations. A range of filtratiorvventilation combinations were also evaluated. A close match to B&H Special Filter (14 mg PMWNF) was achieved via a design route which comprised high ET content, Burley modification to the blend, reduced stem content and high filter pressure drop/reduced ventilation. Project: HINIC The findings of consumer behavioural studies imply that, for most smokers, ap,proximately 0.8 mg of nicotine is a minimum requirement. The task of HINIC is to provide this,.but in combination with minimum feasible tar, yet achieve an acceptability match with Silk Cut (9 mg PMWNF, 0.9 mg nicotine). By using FELT-style blends, a mechanics and flavour match was achieved using a design which delivered 6 mg PMWNF and 0.7 mg nicotne; impact and irritant sensations rated tigtff than Silk Cut. Impact in particular is seen to depend not only upon nicotine delivery and smoke pH but also upon nicotine concentration in tar. A detailed consumer test (Proiect: PUMA) is being conducted with 150 Silk Cut smokers wihich invoives a range oi iactic acid levels. in addition to determining whether Silk Cut has been matched in sensory and preference terms by a lower tar product, the test will also determine whether impact or whole body pharmacological response is the prime driving cue of smoking behaviour. The use of low alkaloid Burley 21 cultivar in blends with Virginia tobacco has resulted in very low cigarette smoke deliveries of specific and volatile nitrosamines, despite the formation of specific nitrosamines in the blended cigarette smoke; and 2. The addition of sugar to low alkaloid Burley 21 cultivar followed by CLD treatment has resulted in significantly decreased cigarette smoke deliveries of specific nitrosamines. In view of the above, it is suggested that: 1. commercial qualities of low alkaloid Burley 21 cultivar be improved or other better low alkaloid Burley cultivars be developed; and 2. commercial blends with low alkaloid Burley 21 cultivar be developed for cigarette srroke organoleptic assessment.
