Dear Lionel, It was nice to have seen you again last week and I am very appreciative of the information you relayed to me. You asked if I could send you copies of the charts which we prepared from Statistics Canada data for comparison with the chart shown on page 2. of your booklet entitled "Medical and Scientific Aspects of Smoking and Health'. The charts are enclosed and are identified as follows:- Figure I - male and female combined. Figure 2 - male only. Figure 3 - female only. These charts cover the same period of time and the same aqe groupings as yours; however they do not show the fall off which appears to be occurring in the U.K. When you say 'incidence of lung cancer' do you mean age specific death rates as we have plotted for the Canadian data? I have also included two charts, one for male and one for female, of U.S.A. data taken from CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, 310) January/ February 1981. Although these data are complete up to only 1977, and are not broken down into age groups, they resemble the Canadian trends and not the U.K. trends. I think the differences between the U.K. and North American data raise a question about the sionificance of the reduction in the level of air pollution which has occurred in the U.K. during the last 25 years. I would be interested in learning of any comments you may have. With best wishes. Yours sincerely, C) NO RSW/PS R.S. WADE. Co -4 -CIA. BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 19 April 1999
