Blackman Westminster House 7 Millbank London SWlP ME Dear Lionel: Your recent letter describing the organizational changes taking place in GR & DC has prompted Pat Dunn and me to think about the consequences of Geoff Felton's forthcoming retirement. We have found his round robin letters very useful over the past years and certainly hope that they can be continued in a similar style. The short critiques of each article are most useful and we frequently use them to keep certain members of our Senior Management informed. We agree completely with you that it will be impossible to find a direct replacement for Geoff. We were, therefore, very pleased to learn that he will continue as a part-time consultant, thus ensuring that his years of experience and his encyclopedic memory will not be lost to BAT. In the past, we have found Geoff's visits to Canada very useful in giving us firsthand information about Smoking and Health activities in other countries and also his critiques of the research projects supported in Canada by the CTKC. It is a few years since Geoff has been to Canada and we are wondering if it would be possible for him to visit us sometime before his retirement in June. In addition to updating us on Smoking and Health activities we think he should visit *11 the CTMC grantees. Our system of selecting projects in undergoing change and will in future be handled by an independent committee of external scientists rather than by the Technical Committee of the -CTMC. Consequently, to allow the new system to come into effect, all present recipients are having their grants automatically extended until June$, 1983. They will be invited to -submit new applications to the new independent committee during the early part of next year. 'It is very 2 co BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 19 April 1999 Page 2. possible that this committee will not see fit to renew all present grants and nay give grants to now applicants. If they can keep to schedule, the comittee plans to advise all applicants by May 15th. of decisions regarding their proposals. The ideal timing for Geoff's visit therefore night be between May 15 th. and June 30th., but we appreciate there could be other commitments and this suggestion may not be practical. We hope you will agree to our proposal that Geoff visit us and we will look forward to hearing from you. With best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Yours sincerely R. S.
