A; July 5, 1979. re" elo epe'd GEOFF HOOK There should be no doubt of my interest in Blending models. Remember I sent Andy Schaffer over to GRDC several years ago to see how we could get our problems on GRDC agenda. This came to nothing at the time although we did immediately thereafter set up O/WP (1) on Canadian brandc to see whether O/WIP could distinguish among the narrow range of difference of all Canadian flue cured unflavoured uncased brands. (2) Start survey of all our leaf grades with O/WP, again to discover whether O/WP would have useful power of discrimination. It now appears from what Geoff says that the Canadian leaf problem (more an imbalance of supply and demand for " leaf grades than one of price) does have group interest and is of interest to GRDC. Having invested so much in this area we certainly want to see it through. My only reluctance to giving Geoff an unequivocal answer stemmed from the fact that I had not had the opportunity of hearing from my own people what they thought, nor of assessing the resource requirements against other priorities. It's probably difficult for GRDC people to appreciate how limited our resources are and that operational priorities always come first in an operating company. If there's a question of funding let's not be "oblique." Let's get a concrete proposal on paper and have a look at it. RMG Oc Oz@ BATCo document for Province of British Columbia I 5 April 1999
