Company Limited Millbank Knowle Green STAINES TW18 IDY Dear David You may not be aware of the draft report produced by Yves Fremion for the European Parliament. This report basically decries not only tobacco sponsorship but all sponsorship ! We have made the Department of National lHentage aware of the reponn and not surprisingly, being strong supporters of the Sportsmatch Scheme we are running on their behalf, they agree that many of the remarks made in the report show a lack of understanding of the benefits of sponsorship not only to sponsors but also to sport. A meeting is being held on 9 March between the ISS, CCPR, GB Sports Council and the Department of National Heritage and I will keep you advised of any significant developments. As I mentioned at the lunch with Nick, Peter Lawson is a strong supporter of tobacco sponsorship and as Secretary of the Sports Inter-Group has the opportunity to ensure that his views are known to the Inter-Group and thereby more widely within the European Parliament and the Commission. As some stage, therefore, it would I believe be useful for your to meet Peter for a general discussion and update on ISS/CCPR activities on the sponsorship front.
