Backing Esq FROM: Trevor Bates DATE: 23 December 1993, SUBJECT: Winston Select The key reason for the success of WINSTON SELECT in the USA domestic market in September - November (see attached table) was because this was the only full revenue brand which offered additional incentives over and above matching of MARLBORO pricing from May to Mid-August. No other'offers'were made on premium price brands during this period. From mid-July to November there was a "Buy I Get I Free" offer (in effect buy 2 get 1) as well as a "Buy 5, Get 5" carton offer, (in effect 5 for 5). Additionally, from September to Mid-November there was a discount scheme of $2 per carton or 20 cents per pack designed to reinforce the previous offer and to create repeat purchase. Early indications are that share has declined following this promotion. A copy oXthe B&W response to my questions is attached.
