CLC I - LONDON : CONnZENCZ PROGRAM The principal aim of the conference will be to discuss options for sustaining a rapid rate of growth in Group prof Its through developments within the Group's chosen areas of activity in Tobacco, Retailing, Pulp/Paper and Financial Services. The draft programme for the conference is attached and the initials against each item indicate which delegates will be asked to speak on the various topics to be covered during the conference. The form of the programme is similar to that for CAC IX with the emphasis in the early items (A-D) being on providing a base of information for the discussions during the later sessions. Delegates will be briefed individually regarding the form of contribution which will fit best with the overall pattern of the presentations of the current situation and issues in each company (Item B) and the introductions to the industry sessions (Item E, 7, H and K). Brief summaries of the introductions to the industry sessions will be circulated during February 1987 in order to provide information about the issues that will be raised so that delegates can prepare their own contributions to these sessions. As in previous years, it is intended that the formal presentations should be relatively brief to allow the maximum time for discussion. The following notes indicate the suggested aim and content of each Item on the programme. Item A : Chairman's Introduction The Chairman will review events and developments since C&C IX and will expand on the aims of CAC X, which will be to discuss options open to the Group- (a) To consolidate existing strengths; (b) To invest in businesses with good long term prospects. Item B : Operating Group/Company Reviews Delegates will be asked to describe the performance of their businesses in 1986 in relation to their objectives and to the previous years performance. They will also be asked to summarize the major issues outstanding and the action in hand to improve their perf ormance their competitive position and their growth potential. Item C : Group Financial Forecast The results the Group is expected to achieve over the next five years will be s-arised, based on the plans of the Operating Groups and Associated Companies. The options open to the Group for maximlsing the availability of resources for new investments will than be discussed. Item D : Group Strategy Review The main strategic issues facing the Group will be summarised. Work to define more clearly the objectives for the geographic and industrial r%J shape of the Group will be described and the implications for preferred directions of strategic thrust will be discussed. --4 (7% U1 U1 BAT Industries document for Province of British Columbia 21 April 1999 Item Z : Retail The introduction will reveiv the Group's retail interests and the major issues seen from a Group point of view. Delegates will then be asked to review their own retailing operations with particular reference to their competitive position, their growth potential and the action that needs to be taken (which may include divestment) to overcome any identified weaknesses and to take advantage of identified growth opportunities. Item F : Pulp/Paper The form of this session will be similar to that for Retail (Item E). The introduction will include a summary of the results of a study undertaken under the aegis of the Pulp and Paper Strategy Team to identify and evaluate opportunities for extending the Group's interests in Market Pulp. Item C : Product Liability The current position worldwide regarding Product Liability will be reviewed and Implications for the Group will be discussed. Item H : Tobacco The form of this session will be similar to that for Items E and F. Particular emphasis will be placed on action to at least maintain profitability and volume in the industry as a whole. Following this, the discussion will centre on options of improving the competitive position within the constraints imposed by the need to maintain good levels of profitability and cash flow. Item I : Smoking Issues Dr. Ray Thornton will sly- arise the current position on Smoking Issues. Item K : Financial Services The introduction to this item will include a summary of a study to consider the likely direction of development for the UK Financial Services market and the implications for B.A.T industries regarding opportunities for establishing a leadership position over a range of services wider than are represented by Eagle Star and Allied Dunbar's current activities. The discussion will also cover the possibilities for B.A.T Industries to become established in similar activities in different countries, the intrinsic development of these activities and the degree to which operations in different countries could or should be linked. Item L : ManagementDevelopment In this session, the options open for improving the recruitment, motivation and development of the Group's Human Resources will be discussed. Item M ; Challengies of the Future ,.he Chairman will su--nri se the results of the conference concentrating particularly on options for specific action to meet the NJ challenge of the future and to achieve the Group's objectives for growth.
