for the CAC X work programme, a copy of which Ls attached.

the issues to be raised so that they can prepare their own

3. For the industry sessions, I have assumed that for Tobacco the aim
will be to discuss the optimum strategits for maximising the profits
and cash flow from this activity and that issues the delegates might
be aske4 to be prepared to discuss could include:-
(a) The relative actractiveness and implied relative priorities
(Including R&D) to be accorded to generics and value-for-muey
brands versus full-priced and innovative brands.
(b) The potential for expansion into monopoly markets.
(c) -Zhe scope for a more positive stance on smoking issues.
(d) Action that might be taken to reduce the vulnerability on
product liability.
(e) Attitudes to k;overnments and the extent to which industry
co-operation is desirable.
I understand that Jr. Bruall is planning to have a draft summary
available durLn-. this week.
4. For the other industry sessions, X have assumed that the aim will be
to Identify and discuss opportunities for positioning the Group in
leadership positions In growth markets.
A draft summary of your own Retail session Is attached.
For the other sessions, you briefed Hr. Worlidge before Christmas and
you were also due to brief 14r. Garraway regarding his Introduction to
the Financial Services session. X do not know what stage either of
them has reached with their summaries.

5 After the end uf February. the next stage will be for you to discuss
with Mr. Carraway how you wish to handle the Finance and Strategy
Review sessions on the Tuesday morning.
You may also wish to discuss with Mr. Dennis how he is intending to
cover tianagement Development In his Thursday afternoon session.
6. An preparations for these discussions, I will prepare draft outlines
of your Chairman's latroducrion (Item A on the prodrame) and the
Group Strategy Review (1cem D).
7. Other issues still co be resolved are:-
(a) What you wish to do about the session on Legal Issue which
Richard Sakdr was due to cover.
(b) When you wish to send the work programme to 'Mr. Butt
(end-Februarv?).
(c) Also, do you wish me to follow up with either Mr. Worlidge or
11r. Carraway regarding the summaries of their papers.
