    SMOKE RETENTION/ HUMAN SMOKING
    Technical C'--jectives
    To determine the relationship-between cigarette design
    (together with associated aspects of smoke chemistry) and
    (a) Insw cigarettes are smoked;
    (b) '--zw the smoke is inhaled;
    (c) ~---w much of the smoke is retained.
    To mee- this objective, a subsidiary objective is the
    imorovement of the methodology appropriate to studying the-se
    relationshins.
    Ccrimnercial Objective
    To ha-.-e available a range of commercially-viable low-
    retention cigarettes, in order to meet anticipated governmental
    and medical pressures for such products.
