Brown cm BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 19 April 1999 USE OF THE NITROMETRANE FRACTION INDEX (NWI) AS AN INDICATOR OF BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF SMOKE SUMMARY The Nitromethane Fraction Index (NNFI) has been established In this laboratory using the method developed by BAT (Hamburg) and wdi- fled by GR A DC (Southampton). It is a relatively rapid and inexpensive test which can give a useful indication of relative biological activity, as assessed by mouse skin painting test. The test is to be kept confi- dential within the BAT group. It is recommended that the NWI test be applied to samples in future projects where there is a possibility of a change In the biolo- gical activity of the smoke.
