1. Smoking Issms Domments.
W "Smoking: the Scientif ic Controversy." This document,
which is a simplif ied and considerably shortened version of
"Smoking and Health : the Urcisolved Debate," will be
received from the printer by the and of February. It will
be recommended f or wider circulation than the prw-rious
document:
e. g. - for all levels of staff
- for non-specialist journalists
- for all types of lobbying exercise.
(ii I Another document, entitled "Smoking : Habit or Addiction?'
will be printed at the as= time. The level of use is
intended to be as wide as that f or `WS : The Science' and
"Smoking : The Scientific Controversy."
(iiii It is proposed that both of these documents, and all
previously issued printed documents, will be reviewed an an
annual basis (f irst review January 1991) and up-dated and
re-printed if necessa-r7.
(iV) Corporate R & D have recently been helping the Tobacco
Institute of New Zealand to prepare a number of mooking
issues documents specifically designed to address is
faced in this country: proposed legislation an
advertising/sponsorship and smoking in public places; e-lairs
about numbers of deaths in New Zealand caused by passive
smoking etc. The advertising and sponsorship documents
contain new information not previously circulated within
BAT. Although at present we have no plans to print them as
BAT documents, they will be circulated to all BAMO
operating companies and CAC es so that they could be
re-printed locally in the event of regulation in this area
being proposed.

(V) Corporate R & D are currently preparing Another document
which will list the major claim made by anti-moking groups
and the media on the following issues:
- primary health
- environmental tobacco smoke
- advertising and sponsorship
and will provide answers to these claim. A number of short
.one--line" statements will be extracted from the answers to
provide company spokespeople with material to cover most of
their needs. The document will be circulated to operating
companies in a loose-leaf binder, by March 1990.
2. M Video
W The video, entitled: '=S. BAVs reply' is completed and
is now being copied for circulation to BAffro. operating
companies mid CAC companies. It is available for both
internal and wcterrAl use, as appropriate:
- to show to staff
- for use in journalists/media briefings
- to show to company visitors wid any other interested
parties.
(ii) An accompanying brochure has also been produced, to be
hwided out to all those who see the video. It provides a
summary of the main points made during the programme which,
for reasons of length, it was not possible to include in the
video itself.
