Seymour Executive Secretary Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers' Council 1808 Sherbrooke Street West Montreal, Quebec H4H 1E5 Dear Chris: on behalf of the Meakins-Christie Laboratories, I would like to submit our application for Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers' Counci 1 funding for 1984-1985. The title of this year's application is: Studies of Respiratory Physiopathology in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease For the past several years the Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers% Council has supported our studies on animal models of tobacco injury. These studies should be completed by the end of September 1984. :A brief progress report is appended. As discussed at our last meeting, we propose a change in our request for continued funding - to studies of i I respiratory phys in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These studies more fairly represent the mainstream of the current research interests in the Meakins-Christie Laboratories. We hope that the Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers'Council will see fit to give their support to these endeavours. The Meakins-Christie Laboratories has been a leading cen: 'tre for research in respiratory physiopathology since its inception An 1972. The laboratories host 25 research trainees from around the world, 11 research directors, and 2-4 professors who spend their sabbaticals here for varying periods of time. The laboratory continues 'ot only to be at the forefront of new knowledge but also continues to grow. As the Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers' Council is no doubt aware, the real value of funding from the Medical Research Council and other public agencies has not been maintained. To this end we are requesting partial funding for three major lines of research that we feel are particularl worthy of support and that are representative of our laboratories. In each area of investigation, we have either identified specific proj cts for which no other funding exists, or have requested funding for rainees or young investigators to work on projects that have funding 6nly for materials and supplies and for technical assistance. ' In addition, a sum of $23,,000 is requested to cover some of our on-going Osearch expenses.
