R. E. Thornton (Dr.) RET/LAP/46D 27 September, 19H2 Professor C. G. Caro, Imperial College of Science & Technology, Prince Con&rt Road, London, SW7. Dear Colin, Thank you very much for your letter of 14 Septttriber setting out your comments on Dr. Mitchinson's proposal. Your comments were very helpful in enabling us to reach a decision on this work and you will be interested to know that we have decided to pass it on to TAC for thei consider8tion. As you say the relevance to cigarette smoking is not immediately obvious and, notwithstanding the plausibility of tile hypothesis, we feel that there must be some limit to the amount of external work we can usefully support. I will h- you know in due course whether or not TAC decide to tund this project. While writing, may I confirm that your grant is being processed via the usual HAT channels and 1 trust you will be able to appoint a suitable person to the post. I look forward to coming up to Imperial College with Dr. Godden in the near future. I will try to arrange something with you in the next week or so. With kind regards. Yours sincerely, 01< R. E.
