1+ I Health Santo Canada Canada International Programs Canada is recognized as a centre of excellence in research on the health consequences and the prevalence of smoking. Canadian laws. policies and health promotion programs are seen as a model by other countries. Health Canada's international pro.-rams are designed to support and strengthen Canada's domestic tobacco control activities throueh initiatives in several areas. Canadian experts will share anti-tobacco programming expertise and provide program assistance to target countries in developing local policies and programs to reduce tobacco consumption. The World Health Orgamzadon Will act as project coordinator and as the vehicle for sharing information on this initiative with other countries. - Health Canada. in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre. will provide support to one or two countries in the field of research on tobacco consumption and production. This program will establish systematic surveillance information systems in areas such as tobacco-related disease. knowledee. attitudes and behaviours surrounding tobacco use; the effects of tobacco production on agricultural systems and the environment, and the effects of tobacco production. use. and manufacturing on a specific nation's econcmv. The research is designed to stimulate countries to develop lezislation and regulations restnain tobacco sales. This prograrn will maintain and expand co-operative in I with countries. such as the United States, wbo already have prominent anti-tobacco programs. Through collective action in areas such as research, legislation, policy development and a Canada will work with other key countries to strenothen international tobacco control efforts. Through two international research programs. Health Canada will gather information on the international tobacco mark-et concerning the relationship between tobacco consumption. income levels and expenditures on tobacco products. and the relation-ship between Canadian and international tobacco manufacturers.
