(b) To provide sensory description and monitoring of smoking behaviour in response to conventional and novel cigarettes. (c) To investigate gm interactions between sensory perception, smoking behaviour, cigarette design and consumer preference. Over the same period, maximum tum-round time from onset to raw has bow halved to one week (OMEGA 111) and 2-3 days kw al other tests. Principally due to orgarftation flux, the paralWl OMEGA panel established in WokkV was regrettably discontinued after a period of operation of some 9 months. In order lo offset this loss a new pool of Southampton volunteers has been recruRed for training in January 1991. CD C 1991 BATCo. Oa nd mpy or show to urwuVwh" pwsom. BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 23 April '1999 53 in support of the OMEGA network, two replacement panel leaders for the BAT Hong Kong panel operation were fully trained on site and a complete now panel (plus leaders) was trained in situ for BAT Espaha via a one week custom designed workshop. This brings the OMEGA network to 40 Operating Companies. For the Southampton operation. a menthol evaluation method has been added to the range of tests available and a now system of masking using a hand hold printer has' been implemented. This system allows the use of alpha-numeric coding and avoidance of masking tape colour bias. The system is to be implemented within the next OMEGA workshop series, preparatory to which, an interim status review questionnaire has been despatched to all Operating Companies. This allows identification of specific panel problems and assists the desigrVemphasis for the 1991 Workshops. It is expected that all 4 regional Workshops will be completed in 1991(03-4)/1992(01) covering Europe. Africa, Far East/Indan sub-continent and Latin America. Key themes for these one week workshops will be: (a) the practicality of fitting relevant tests from the OMEGA array to specific client needs (b) tobacco flavour descriptive evaluation (c) adherence to statistical action standards In 1991 it is anticipated that some 20% of sensory testing support will be devoted to collaboration with FRC Chemosensory group. This additional client loading will be offset by increased k)cal panel size. BEMAVIOURAL TESTING (SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT) The year has been largely devoted to equipment developmenVvalidation. To complement the speed of data collection represented by the portable 8 channel behaviouralmonitorkVsystem now used in all I field trials, an 8 (repricated) ) port duplicator has been undergoing vabdabom This system can simultaneously duplicate 8 kxfmdual smoker records. 1990 01-3 was devoted to validating this row development to appropriate action standards and appkabon trials on the Project PUMA data base (see below). The system is now varidated and a project has been initiated to develop a second mult-port duplicator (1991, 011). This companion duplicator wig manage data from a second 8 channel field monitoring system also constructed in 1990. The now duplicator will be designed lo include advanced data handling sens" to further reduce duplication estimation error. This is rok* lo be achieved by adoption of stepping motorlperistattic PUMP as opposed to the current gear driven units. C 1991 BATCo. Oo not copy or stww la unwAhonsed perms. U4 BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 23 April 1999 54 Project PUMA. a major product placement and behavioural monitoring study using 150 U.K. Silk Cut consumers is now completed to the stage of (a) derivation of smoking records (b) analysis of sensory rating questionnaires (c) duplication of sub-set data. Puma uses a range of cigarettes created via a high nicotine lo tar ratio cigarette from which the impact has been successively attenuated using lactic acid ameliorant. Objectives of the study are (a@ to determine whether impact or whole body pharmacological response are the prime driving cues of smoking behaviour (b) whether the relative roles of these cues change as a function of extended (two week) placement (c) whether it is possible to match in sensory/preference terms a commercial target such as Silk Cut with a lower tar/higher nicotine product. Preliminary findings, to be consolidated by duplication currently underway, indicate that there is a limited tendency for smoking behaviour intensiveness to increase in response to increased lactic acid application (ergo reduced impact) indicating a provisional hypothesis that impact may be an important cue regulator of smoking behaviour. Analysis of variance of smoking records fails to show any significant modification of behaviour as a function of extended trial supporting the hypothesis that learned behaviourW smoking style may be quite resistant to extinction. Finally, Silk Cut maintained a significant preference over the whole experimental series, this being attributable to superior taste quality (lactic acid having appeared to contribute a flattening of said attribute). An additional objective was derived for PUMA: To fully characterise the smoking behaviour pattern of Silk Cut smokers (masked and unmasked). and to determine the degree of homogeneity of style within this N=150 sample. This objective, currently underway, formsthefirststagoolProjed RAPHAELwhichwig have the overall objective of constructing a library of normative smoking behaviour records which can be used by product developers to simulate Itypicar smoker response to product development variants. In 1991 ft is anticipated OW some 25% of behavioural section ac" wig be devoted to collaborative support for FRC chemosansory group. This additional client loading will be oftet by (a) iniOation of a permanent in-house mulb-channel Whavioural panel room (b) construction of a second multi-channel dupficator. Group-wide basis in order to re-assort the strategic contribution that market research makes to the business and to support BAT researchers capability so to do.. This objective has been deployed in 1990 via an initiative referred to as ORACLE. The aim of ORACLE is to organise the Group into 5 regions (Europe, Far East South America, Central America, Africa. India Sub-continent). All Operating Companies in each region are initially reviewed to identify and report strengths, weaknesses and needs in the Market Research function plus the supply side agencies. Following the regional reviews, a workshop is implemented for Marketing and Market Research Managers at which ORACLE methods developed at this site are made available. AO methods are software backed and the set of modules now covers: 1 . Product space mapping 2. Brand image mapping 3. Qualitative content analysis 4. Price sensitivity modelling S. Advertising reaction method S. Simulated Test Market methods (share based and volumetric) In the last quarter of 1990, a further module was developed, SEGMAP, which allows for direct superimposition of consumer preference dusters onto product/brand image maps. Progressing the penetration of these methods into the Group is augmented by appoinbnent of 'regional coordinators' (one per network) who are represented by the Market Research Manager in the region best placed to work with CR & PT group in order to paceset The aim is Om application of ORACLE methods in their market and to subsquenDy support others in the region during of same. ORACLE inaugural Workshops ha" been completed for Europe, Far East South America and regional coordinators appointed for al of the above including Cor*aI America. In last quarter of 1990 two projects have been completed to reporting stage: AERO and SNICKERS. Both projects have a common objective: to demonstrate how an ORACLE module is implemented from planning through data collection to analysis and reporting. AERO demonstrates Brand image mapping, Price sensitivity modelling and Segmentation Mapping. whilst SNICKERS (in conjunction with SAT Nederland) will demonstrate a full ORACLE Simulated Test Market application. These projects will be reported in first quarter I 991 in the form of detailed how-to-doA manuals and will be supported by video films where documentary form is inadequate (i.e. how the interviews/questionnaires are conducted). This approach should ensure that Operating Company uncertainties are removed with regard to ORACLE application. The policy of validation studies leading to manuals and films (where recassary), will be maintained for all ORACLE modules and in each case (as with AERO and SNICKERS) live consumer samples will be used to coiled data. The training aspect of ORACLE was active throughout 1990 with extended on-site courses completed for now Market Research Managers from Venezuela, Malaysia, Zimbabwe, Argentina and Hong Kong.
