Dear Professor Ames, I am a scientific adviser to the B.A.T. Group of companies and have been closely following your work, particularly since your remarkable paper in "Science" in 1983. In particular I have been following your views on the evidence that implicates oxidative damage in ageing processes generally and in carcinogenesis in particular. The probable importance of oxidative damage has also been stressed by other investigators with whom I have recently been in contact, including Dr H Bartsch of the Intern3tiOnal Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon. and Dr Francis Roe, an independent toxicologist in London. The potential importance of this area as far as the B.A.T. Group of companies is concerned is underlined by the fact that several of the people whom we support are currenti,. invoking various aspects of oxidative damage to ration3lise some of their experimental findings. Consequently, we are keen to receive an overview of this area. The purpose c1-7 this letter is to enquire as to whether there is any possibility that you would be willing to address senior scientific staff of the B.A.T Industries Group of comoanies possibly at the annual meeting on research topics scheduled for the week of 18th September. 1989 in Vancouver. Canada, or on some other occasion and venue which is mutually convenient. It is likely that the following countries would be represented:- Australia, 3razil, Canada, Germanv,CK, USA. B.A.T Industries is a diversified multinational Company based in London and your audience will represent the principal Companies within the Group. Although the B.A.T. Group of companies has tobacco interests. its interest and involvement in fundamental science is much broader than just tobacco chemistrv and toxicology. If you prepared to talk to us we would meet all your reasonable expenses and first class air faces (for example, Sat) Francisco to Vancouver and return) together with an appropriate hon a ;'i thin the broad remit of the area we would like addressed, there voul be no constraints whatsoever on content. 0N @z in Lon%km Nambcr Cablos: Vchicukir London SW: all- Loll BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 20 April 1999 Ve are very much hoping that vou would be able to accept our invitation and if you would like to discuss matters with me directiv I shall be in the US and Canada in Hav this year and could visit you around 16th or 17th May, or possibly 22nd Mav.
