BAT GROUP TECHNICAL PROGRAM STATUS SUMMARY DATE: 06/24/93 Work Area: 01 Product Technology Key Activity: 0 1.02 Root Technology Group Coor.: A. Rodrigues Oblectivefflusiness Relevasice: Establish how the basic principles of Root Technology (flavor generation, ammonia/hicotine exchange, and irritation reduction) may be applied in an optimized manner both to US blend and flue-cured products as a means of obtaining products with better-than-competitor organoleptic characteristics. SlAtus Three basic principles of Root Technology, have so far been appropriately established and identified. However, their optimized incorporation into the various BAT's current product concepts and their compliance with different consumer needs call for a more thorough evaluation. The projects in this work area reveal this concern. two projects we concerned with production of new reaction flavors (01.02.01 and 01.02.06) which as mentioned above are complementary to rather than a duplication of effiort, particularly if the participating groups put forth a coordinate and communicative action. The other projects am aimed at establishing the optimized usage or even the fitness of using RT on different product concepts. Project 01.02.01 is invaWtiating how difibraftiated aromas and tWe can be obtained! by combining clifferent ammonium sourca with difierem sugars under several reaction conditions. Project 01.02.02 is evaluating sienwry effects on blended cigarettes caused by the arnmoniation of Va tobacco grades prior to song. Project 01.02-03 is setting the best processing step to add different ammonia sources and how these interact in in optimized way and in sawry terms with diffitratt blend components and rection flavors. US type blends have been found to better benefit Arorn ammonia sources when then am added to Va lamina or stems. Project 01.07-04 compares the addition of different BAT RT tools to fluecured products with the ii"tion of Malawi Burley. An analytical investigation is being carried out to check whother PM is using RT in flue- cured products in two differvit markets. Proact 01.02.05 uses the Venezuelan market to investigate if ammonisted DEER can match PMs RCB in terms of taste and flavors. Pmject 01.02.06 scales up a high pressure, high tempeniture reactor to optimize preparation of new reaction flavors following EC directives.
