BAT GROUP TECHNICAL PROGRAM STATUS SUMMARY DATE: 06/11/93 Work Area: 0 1 Product Technology Key Activity: 0 1.04 Materials Technology Group Coor.: K. St. Charles ObjectivelButiness Rdev=r. To evaluate and develop materials which improve or preserve product quality. Status The portfolio consists of four projects related to packaging, three projects related to filter additives, and one project related to menthol application. The anticipated projects related to tobacco and cigarette physical properties are awaiting recruitment of one person. An offer has been made but not accepted as yet. Packaging projects are concerned with both retaining moisture and flavori; as well as protecting the product fi*m odernal abuses. Information from B&W needs to be (and will be) shared with BATCo regarding moisture loss ftough the overwrap film relative to the pick seal. This has been previously characterized and models developed. Overall, the projects am complementary, Two of the three filter projects concern carbon (charcoal) filters. Although there is a slight overlap with studies on the active patch filter. the projects am complementary rather than a duplicate of effort. The one project on menthol application allso concerns protecting the product filom deterioration in quality. Comparison of menthol application methods in a controlled manner appears very worthwhile to maintain AWbility within the group. B&W studies concerning the importance of menthol type and level on product acceptability needs to be shared with BATCo to complement their studies.
