Research Paper \,"o. 10 "The Psycholoocal Dvnai.ntcs of Smoking" The Tobacco Research Council has published the tenth in its series of research papers on smoking and health matters Its title is "The Psychological Dynamics of Smoking" and it reports the results of research undertaken by Psychologists of the Human Resources Centre of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations in col:aboration with Public Attitude Surveys Ltd. who were responsible for the survey flieldwork. The authors are Dr. F. E. Emery, '.\-Ir. B. L. Irving and Miss-Z. L. Hilgendorf. The paper, the first on a psychological theme in the series, describes a study @ a in 1963 into the motives for smoking which the Council agreed to support. A sample of 2, 494 adults was interviewed and a comprehensive questionnaire used which included a number of standard tests. The study's Main conclusion was that the persistent pre-conditions for smoking can be found in the complex interaction Fall between an individual's experience of stress and his susceptibility to emotional arousal. A copy of the report accompanies this release. The Tobacco Research Council was originally established, as the 'Tobacco Manufacturers' Standing Committee' in 1956 by the tobacco industry to conduct and support research into smoking and health.
