Subject: Tobacco smoke filter.
Description:
Discs, punched from glass (silicate) fibres treated in an
undisclosed manner to modify the fibre surface, are assembled into
filters so that the disc face is perpendicular to the direction of air/
smoke flow. The disc had no electrostatic properties which could
influence the filter performance. Filter claimed to reduce TPM to
10-12 mg. on King Size cigarettes (reducing nicotine proportionately).

Comments: B.A.T. Hamburg had already looked at Dr. Mach's filter
(late 1969).
Action Taken: Dr. Mach was invited to R. & D. Southampton to
demonstrate the assemblv of the filter material into filter tips and to
observe the evaluation oil the filters. Dr. Mach brought a number of
small. sneets nnade from C.- I cis (sil@cate) fibres which had been treated
in an undisclosed manner to mod I fy the fibre surface. Dr. Green
wrote to Mr. Perry 2 Oth December, 1971 informing him that B-A. T.
had no further interest in the filter since, the incorporation of
inorganic fibrous in any smoking article Nvould be against various policy
decisions.
