The purpose of this newsletter is to bring You up to date on these new developments in the consumer and financial divisions, ~I "'lwll -··~~I, COMMERCIAL CHECK SYSTEM ,j ~L~ ~··--· -:...... One of the new things we will be launching in 1988 is the Commercial Check System, which we have already presented to some potential clients during the course of a one week demonstration in early October, Over 80 individuals from 50 companies came to see the system, and the feedback was very encouraging I we are licensing this system from a German company and will be members of an international network providing the sane system in nest European countries, The Commercia! Check System allows the level of viewer involvement in commercials to be measured as they are shown, and produces a graphic overlay on a recording of the commercial, Sd that this level of involvement can be instantly examined and analysed, It provides a superb additional diagnostic tool to both ~ualitative and quantitative advertising research, For information or a demonstratj~or,, contact Maggie Martin or Sue puinn, NEW COMPANY BROCHURE in we are very proud of OUT new company brochure which was recently sent to current and potential clients, Judging by the letters and comments we have received, it seems to have made a favourable impression, This brochure gives ah overview of our range of services and experience, If you did not receive a copy or are interested in ether brochures on individual services, please contact sharon Bowlus, a BATCo document for Legal Senrices : Health Canada 20 May 11999 ADVISERLINE The specialist financial services unit has now been in· operation since April and our telephone panel, Ad~viserline, which is made up of chartered accountants, solicitors and investment advisers has been used very successfully by a number of clien'cs~ The panel provides easy access to this important group of decision makers and any sample camp3siti6n can he selected both in terms of the geographical spread and the panel members' advisory capacity, A specialist technique which has been employed to great effect in the field of consumer finance has been the fiarge Group Test, The main application is far exploratory and diagnostic work, By approaching the issues from a variety of angles such as a standard sized group discussion, a semi-structured interview and a self-completion questionnaire, the reactions of the general public can be investigated thoroughly in a way which may not be possible it only one of the above techniques is used in isolation. In the light of the repercussions from Black Monday on October 17th, when the world's Stock Markets Buffered the most dramatic fall yet recorded, the Financial Services Unit has undertaken a syndicated study amongst both private shareholders and professional advisers on the AdviserLine panel to gauge their reactions towards investing on the Stock Market in either the short or long term: whether unit trusts are perceived to be a safer investment than company equities and whether the BF debacle has affected the general public's attitude to future privatisations, The tables will be available by Christmas and the report in the New Year, For further in formation , please contact either Maggie Martin or claire Beadan, 'PUICK FACTS' - INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH Our fast~expandillg field and tab department Ipuick Faetsl has found that an increasing number of clients request multi· national fieldwork, This year, international fieldwork studies have covered numerous subj ects including hotels, computers, magazines, and yoghurt, It was decided, therefore, to amalgamate Quick Facts with the consumer group headed by Roger wright, which specialises in full service consumer projects 4 internationally, O BATCa document f6r Legal Senriees : Health Canada 20 May 1999 I By combining the two consumer groups which conduct most of our international studies, we are strengthening our knowledge of the capabilities of our colleagues in other countries and can be sure of obtaining quality fieldwork at a competitive price, The amalgamation has the additional benefit that Roger, while continuing as a full service consumer executive, is an hand to help with advice on saapling, questionnaire design and specification of data processing which has always been a strong feature of field and tab service, For your field and tab requirements in the U,K, and abroad, contact Daphne Eatwell, PACKAGING RESEARCH As a result of increased demand for Packaging Research, we have recently acpuireci tvo more Standout machines, bringing the number available for use to four, This means that we now have facilities to: - carry out several different packaging studies in the course of the same week~ ~ provide quicker turnaround in a single study by using two or more machines simultaneously in different locations, or by increasing throughput per day at a single site, - use separate machines simultaneously for conducting different types of standout tests, e,g, aided and unaided, standout as a measure of on·shelf impact is, of course, only one of the techniques in our Packaging Research repertoire, Most clients find that it is essential to combine it with at least one other measure, usually pack conununicatjcn and image, to find out whether the pack that is attracting all that attention is actually getting across the right message, Another measure which is being increasingly used is our '6imulatad supermarket Test' 'Warkpast' which measures recall of packaging information Obtained from 'walking' past a simulated supermarket shelf display, This is invaluable for detecting whether branding has been lost in pack design changes, and has even been used as evidence for potential litigation in 'passing off' proceedingsl If you would li)te to discuss a particular packaging research OO issue with us or would like a presentation of our techniques, please contact sue Quinn, O\ BATCo document for Legal Services : Health Canada 20 May 1999 _ _____ _ __· SENSORY RE8EARCH LABOR~ORI~S Martin Ba~lin has recently announced the ~atting up of a new subsidiary, sensory Research Llboratarila Limited, in partnership with Dr. Tony lilliup, who is to be its nanaging director, The company extends our existing sensory research facilities by providing a comprehensive service for clients wishing to carry out detailed sensory and attitudinal evaluations of their productP~ The service includes: expert advice and panel training, computer hardware and software far clients wishing to carry cut such work in house expert product-orientated panels for bath routine quality cactrol and off ilavonr investigations detailed evaluation and ogtiPisation of product formulations by consumer and expert panels chemical and physical product evaluation powerful statistical techniques to link sensory, chemical and physical prcperties with consumer preference Dr, Tony Williang joins the new company froP the APRe Institute of Food Research, Reading Laboraton, where he was Head of Iced and Beverage AceeptabJlity, prior to which he headed a similar group at tong lohton Research Station, University of Bristol~ He is an international figure in this field and has, over the past 20 years, developed many new and powerful techniques bath in respect to sensory methodology and interpretation and associated chemical and physical ~r~lp~ We have found ourselves increasingly undertaking product development work using our sensory testing technipues, and this development is an exciting and logical extension of our sewicss ~ Initially the new company will operate from our offices In LonBan, but will set up a consumer testing and analytical centre in the Bristol area in the near future, For lore information, contact Tony aillius or Derek ~artial SPORTS BPONSORSHIP Our service for tracking the public's awareness of sports O Jponsbrship continues to thrive.
