Cb BATCo document for Legal Services : Health Canada 19 May 1999 GROUP A, SESSION i, MIDDLE TAR MALES Restrictions on Smokers Nowadays A recent e;cample · in landon I went up to meet a friend of mine from New Zealand - we were going to go to a show, theatre and dinner that kind of thing and for the first time in my l'fe I discovered you can't smoke anywhere on the Tube stations now, I didn't mind not sooting in a tube train, but t didn't realise you couldn't smoke on a Tube platform even. 1 thought that's a bit heavy, Needless to say me being a stranger in London these days I puffed away like mad and f gradually noticed all these signs and I thought that's funny but no·one bothered to stop me, Had no reaction from anyone, At the same time I realired that this was another phase of this anti· smoking campaign, I'm extremely worried personally, about the way that you've got minorities trying to impose their views on the majority and they get away with it, Well, not only tube stations, you try to find a smoking compartment on British Rail now - you can't find them. Na, it's not law in itself, It's a request, On public transport it's a bye-law - a sort of local law, In shops now they always come up with this answer · it's because of insurance, What annoys me If you go on a bus and you go upstairs tit says) "in the Interests of hygiene passengers are requested not to smoke", I've been on top of a bus several times and I've lit up especially when there's not many people on the bus, ~i:st of all you get the cough and then someone turns round. That's the sort of thing that infuriates the majority of non· smokers, I think it's fair and reasonable to ask a person not to smoke if somebody else doesn't Smoke, If you've got a segregated area I think that's the ideal situation. Most reasonable proprietors and places will give an area for people to smoke in, I think it's ftnny the way you used to have no smoking areas - small no smoking areas, Now you have small smoking areas, The emphasis has changed. The stagnant smell - Stale odouf, Discarding of the ash and butts - on saucers, in plates, glasses and everything. It might be due to that · as far as I can remember I've always smoked 60 a day but I think there's more smoke now from cigarettes. To a certain extent it may be that people are talking shout i: more, making me aware of it, I've got a friend who Is Welsh, he's a rugby player, and he gave up smoking a year ago and he's just come to stay with me · he's been with me for 3 months and when he first arrived he said I can't stand this and he's got used to it, It's embarrassing me to a certain extent that I smoke he he's in the room but then I thought to hell with this, it's my home so I can do what I like with it, But when he's in and I come through the door even t can smell it when i haven't been there for 3 or 4 hours, I think he's got a point there, But he said to me the other day he's got used to it, He's managed to accept it but it does worry me to a certain extent, Have You Ever Had Anyone Ask You to Stop Smoking? The first couple of days it might bother you but you know on the ship where you can smoke, After the first couple of days it just didn't bother you, I've had people say [ wish you wouldn't smoke · they don't actually tell you not to smoke. Sometimes now I phone up and ask if they've got any:est:ictions on smoking, It's the - same with pubs · if I can't smoke I wouldn't go in there. I: get more pleasure out of smoking than a guy has displeasure in me smoking and I'd tell him so too. I don't agree with that. i think a lot of smokers, especially the younger age group are totally discourteous and I think a lot of older smokers are coo. I think it's only right and proper that you regard other peoples wishes. I wouldn't smoke if I thought somebody objected to it because I think its more obj:ectionable to him my smoking than for me not to have a cigarette. You rationed me to 2 cigarettes a day 50 I couldn't give it a proper go could I? If I'd had more Ild have s~noted n~ore. I rationed them out rather than going straight through then all, I kept going back to it · there was a limited amount of space, (In the diary,) In my case they did work out to a packet of cigarettes, I smoke 60·80 cigarettes per day, i analysed it · ~'d cut my cigarettes down Sy 20 cigarettes a day to 40 cigarettes as against 6l-80, 1 kept going bick to them, The first one I had I found the most satisfactory, i think a lot of it is psychological because we Here asked before we left this room at say 11.30 a,m, We were given the first one and I stayed with that until after I'd done the breath test at 3,45 p,m, I stayed with that 1 Favor cigarette, Normally with conventional cigarettes I'm climbing the wall for one if I've been told you can't smoke · like in hospital, I found by smoking that one that I didn't even want a conventional cigarette but I stilt think that was psychological because we were told we don't want you to smoke conventional cigarettes because itlll show up in your breath test, Then I used them for a couple of hours a day and cut down by smoking of conventional cigarettes to 40 a day, I would use them in places where you can't smoke, I would use it as a conventional cigarette if it had more pulling power on it, I found it very hard to draw on it - that was the frustrating thing about it, Also the lack of the smoke · blowing it down your nose and out of your mouth, There again i think that's ~sydolo~ical because you can see e the smoke, If the finish of the cigarette wasn't as solid, O it it was a softer material and also with more pull to it, IPbb Bh.f. IC,K. lnd Elpnl limld flu~ ~pon mur~ not k epplcd or Ihom to uallrilcd pmon ~D BATCo document for legal Services : Health Canada 19 May 1999 ·18· It was quite hard to draw and it made my throat sore, Put your finger over the top like that,,,, It was too hard to draw, I took t~e tip off it, I took the paper tip off and crushed it So i wouldn't get the impregnated use, I was using it like a cigarette holder one time · I took the other tip out of it and put a cigarette in there, I tried and tried - I've been a heavy smoker all my life, I just could not get anything out of it, I went giddy puffing away, I've got to agree with you · r didn't get anything out of it whatsoever, I started off quite sceptical · I didn't get any taste for maybe the first day or so but, 1 kept pe:lcveling, I didn't ration myself · I used mine up in about 4 days, As I smoked them more I gradually started getting the taste and I got quite used to them, fhey were cutting down my ordinary fags · I found that I didn't want a conventional cigarette, I got quite used to th~, I think a lot of it was just holding it in may hand that took away some of the craving because ydu're holding it like a normal cigarette, I Hasn't using it purposely to cut down ordinary cigarettes but it just did, I wasn't doing it consciously either but I found it did cut me down, If they were on sale I don't think Ild buy them regularly to Smoke but I think I'd definitely keep a packet on me for when I'm in places where I can't smore, 19# BA.T. I think that's the best of the three, I don't normally smoke menthol but i think that's the best. The tips started to chip · it got quite sharp, the actual plastic chips, to be quite honest i had to drag on tnem sc hard to get anything through then i probably did 1?17? the thing out, If they made them more like a conventional cigarette. The whole feel of it has got to be different, I think that's what puts you off · you know you're not smoking a real cigarette because of the feel, I think the whole thing about sroking is the arhtray, flicking. the ash, stubbing it out · seeing the Smoke that is the whole enjoyment · ;missed that especially after a meal I was dragging away and I didn't get anything, I didn't like it that you didn't get any sensation when you drew in until you drew out.
