7.3 Recommendations To defend our position, we recommend the following action: 7.3.1 The resources available to NMAs in the areas of quality of personnel and level of funding need to be closely examined. It is vital that they have sufficient strength to compete adequately with the local. anti-smoking forces. 7.3.2 A recognition that the anti-smoking forces are national as well as international and the attacks on smoking have to be defended at both levels. 7.3.3 At international level, increased activity in research into smoking issues, particularly the passive smoking.question. A drive to recruit more scientists to contribute to the pool of knowledge available to industry. This could include more input from scientists employed by companies in the product development areas. 7.3.4 The consideration, of a mechanism which will enable statements on behalf of industry to be made by people in a leadership role, both association and company. We are simply not responding to unfair accusations and blatantly inaccurate statements. 7.3.5 The absolute necessity of creating a credible advertising stance and not leaving the industry open to accusations of by-passing government regulations and voluntary agreements in the marketing area. 7.3.6 Employing public relations techniques to gain media exposure of information favourable to the industry. 7.3.7 To mobilise allies more effectively in the areas of Leaf growing Advertising News media co c0 October 1983 BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 27 October 1999
