Esq. 7 Millbank London SWIP ME, England Dear Lionel: Imperial Tobacco Limited /LilylitCe January 12, 1982 po Regarding your inquiry about BAT involvement in CORESTA, we are not too well informed. The last time this subject was discussed, at a Group R&D Conference some years ago, thetadvic;ffromtthe "Centre" was that the Centre would represent BAT and hat a ilia es ought not to become members. The Centre would represent and communicate. We do not attend CORESTA conferences (unless held in North America), so we have nothing much to go on, other than reports by people such as Henry Horsewell. Perhaps if we knew more detail about the working activities of CORESTA and the extent of GR&DC involvement and working effort, we could better answer your letter, but in principle we share your concern over the expense and diversion of GROC effort implied by representation on the Scientific Commission. Regarding the value of CORESTA, its role as an industry voice in the establishment of analytical methods and physical test procedures does appear to be worthy of support. For example, we are currently finding our newly established line of communication with Wintermans to be of value, due to Wintermans' involvement in cigar testing methodology. A current Canadian issue is whether the Canadian cigarette smoke testing regime or an "international" cigar testing regime will be adopted for small cigars. I notice your letter was addressed to me but starts "Dear Siqueira," and I assume yours is a round robin letter, and Siqueira has in fact received a copy. With kind regards. Yours sincerely, Gibb CO cc CO BATCo document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 10 November 1999
