S.R. EVELYN/PSB/46D-10 CORESTA NOTE FOR MR. E.A.A. BRUELL ccs: Dr. I.W. Hughes Dr. G. Stungis C 0 R E S T A 24 th October, 1984 0, Although you are probably already aware of the situation, I wish to confirm that BARCLAY was NOT attacked at the CORESTA Meeting in Vienna. Further, it was not a topic of general discussion. From various discussions it was clear that although BAT's mem- bership (Germany and UK: on behalf of BAT Suisse) and the scientific contributions are welcome, the somewhat ambivalent approach which the Company has to CORESTA is perceived by the organisation and, for this reason, we do not have any real influence. This view was expressed in discussions with Westcott (Imperial) and, to a lesser extent, by Adams who has resigned as coordinator of the Task Force on ventilation. To have some influence in CORESTA, I believe that BAT UK would have to become members and be willing to contribute to various task force activities over a number of years. It was also clear that Philip Morris and Reynolds,. through their long-term commitment to CORESTA, have a lot of power in the organisa- tion. This was particularly well illustrated in the selection of the four co-opted members of the Scientific Commission. Although Hollweg of BAT Germany had gained slightly more votes than Osdene (PM) in the 110 voting by members, Osdene was invited to join the Scientific Commis- 00 --,I sion. Subsequently Osdene was appointed a Vice Chairman of the Commission: N. Baskevitch of de Mauduit was appointed as second Vice Un Chairman. Akehurst of Carreras Rothmans remains as Chairman. BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 10 November 1999 Contact was made with Dr. J.S. Cole (Deputy Ditector, Tobacco Research Board, Zimbabwe) early in the week. He is a member of the Scientific Commission and we had met previously when he visited GRWC. Although he is not in a strong position he was prepared to talk generally and answer questions. Cole was able to confirm that BARCLAY or by-pass filters were not discussed in the meetings of the Scientific Commission. Following the appointment of Osdene in favour of Hollweg, Cole com- mented that he was surprised but it was obviously pre-arranged and there was nothing that he could do. Obviously a lot goes on behind the scenes and I learned that all members of the Scientific Commission were booVed into the Hilton Hotel where they had a private hospitality suite. Unfortunately Cole had to move to another hotel because of the cost at the Hilton. In the absence of any attack, one of my main impressions was that the overall position in relation to filters and ventilation is becoming more complex and diffuse. This relates primarily to the papers on the CY filter and on-line laser perforation. Although these developnumis do not specifically ensure separation of the diluting air and the smoLe, they effect a separation which may be almost complete in. some case.;. Notes on these developments and copies of the papers are attached. Distribution: Dr. F. Seehofer Frau R. Schroder Mr. P.R. Manley M~ne H. Ibig Mr. X. Cannar S.R.
