Flt*~Co-'09ct SRC-/PMW/46DI10 R.tl. Gibb Esq., Imperial Tobacco Limited, P.O. Box 6500 Rontreal Dear Bob, l6 th November, 1931 Whilst attending a course at BIBRA last week, I inet a Dr. Eva Kovacs fron. the Canadian Ninistry of Health. I understood that she i5 in the U.K. for two to three months, spending most of the time at BIBRA, but that she will also be visiting the Shc1l toxicological laboratories at Sittingbourne, and one or two places in London (I)IISS?). Although you may well Rnow her, I believe that the main topics which she 'covers are pesticides, and food additives. Nevertheless, because of the shortages of sta'ff and the workload I got tile impression that she was askad to tackle a variety of jobs. Durin& tile week I talked to her on a couple of occasionst usually at coffee tii.-te. Although I indicatea a connection with ITL, we did not directly discuss additives to tobacco. Puch of the conversation centred on the relations between the Industry and the Government. She seenzdkeen to foster such discussions and was critical of tile situation in the States compared with the normally good relationships in the U.K. I commented that it seemed very sensible that we were able to talk "in confidence" to the Scientific Secretariat of the DIISS; she felt that the situation in Canada was reasonable, although it was stlll coloured by the spill-over from the States. Her view was that the Ministry did not want to follow the U.S. pattern despite the obvious pressures. I thought you would like to be aware of the contact, and of the gist of the discussions. With kind regards, Yours sincerely,,7 CX:) ___J kli( S.R. EVELY, bcs: Dr. L.C.F. Blackman Mr. A.L. Heard BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 9 November 1999
