FH/VC/38 6th May, 1975 To: DR. C. I. AYRES MR. H. G. HORSEWELL GROUP R.& D. CONFERENCE - MERANO April 1975 I would be grateful if you would take into account in the planning of your future work the following item from the above. 13. The publication of the concentrations of gas phase constituents in smoke from German cigarettes was discussed. It was felt that this was likely to be expanded to cover a wider range of components, which might be expected to evoke a public reaction and that it would be followed up in other countries. It was agreed that while we should not encourage this development we should aim in the event of publication that figures should be given for the weight of constit- ent delivered. It was realised that these developments will give rise to marketing opportunities in some countries. There are a variety of possibilities arising from research which can come to fruition in this situation. These include carbon filters (including diffusion filters), mixed bed filters, synthetic resins and ventilation. The following constituents are listed in Hunter Phase I which could contribute to the gas phase: Hydrogen cyanide Steam-volatile phenols Total volatile aldehydes, Carbon monoxide Total oxides of nitrogen Organic nitriles Oxides of sulphur Hydrogen sulphide Ammonia and primary amines Nitrosamines, Nicotine CD 110 c0 co C7% 01% r"i BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 9 November 1999
