17 ADDIT10NAL ITEMS TO BE RAISED rt RESEARCH CONFERENCE CANADA (1) Improve Efficiency of Cigarette About 5% of the smoke generated enters the smoker's mouth, in low tar brands. Is it possible through radical cigarette design to yield a similar and satisfactory smoking experience with a much more efficient utilization of tobacco? This is not a new idea and elements of research on it may be found in the expanded tobacco work. Low tar cigarettes now create the opportunity, and it might be worthwhile to have this as a unifying strategic objective. (2) Be in a position to know how to ward off or react to serious outbreaks of tobacco disease. This stems from our Blue Mould experience. Are there other threats? GRUC (1) Non-Tobacco Smoking Materials Do we need to renew our activities or should this topic be left dormant? If we should renew our activities what do Associatespropose for consideration in the work programme? (2) Flavour Materials for Addition to Cigarettes An agreed procedure is necessary for getting sample quantities of materials to appropriate Companies once we have identified a material which we believe has potential for development into a commercial flavourant. Only a limited number of samples is likely and Associates should be prepared to give a rapid feed back of information. Flavour enhancers may well be appropriate for some types of tobacco and not Pthers. (3) Collaboration with Fir--enich A suggestion for collaboration with Firmenich has been put forward (see attached memo). Is this suggestion acceptable to the major operating Companies? c0 co CZ:> (_PJ C7 N BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 9 November 1999 GERMANY (1) Technical planning process development to reduce nitrate contents of stems.11 continuous pre-conditioning of strips (for instance the Dickinson Unit) process development! elucidation of the physical processes within the steaming cylinder. method for measuring continuous filling power improvement.
