It is clear requires global rr facilities in place to enable fast information exchange anc consistent decision making. It is our vision that every PC workstation should be c=ected through a coalmon world wide net- wor$~ that the same desk top software be used everywhere; that you should be able to access your authorised data from a PC workstabon anywhere in the world as if you were at your own desk. This is impossible with the current status of BATs installed technologies. We have all, for good locaj reasons, chosw different products and configurations which do not easily integrate. A c:mmon'look and fee)'across the organisation will require an enterprise network comprising common desktop products, standards and architemires. Supporting and monitoring the enter- pnse networK our global IT facilities, even after a common approach is agreed, will be a major administration task, How will software ver3ions be ccntrobed? How will training be managed? Who will control and manage changes to the enterprise network? Where will the help desk be sitL=ed? The issues to be addressed are daunting. However, the business is relying on us. We must make it work within the limit of available technol-- ogy. To that end we have inkiated, under the auspices of Project Battalion, a number of fT projects to evaluate the issues and possible solutions. This newsletter, the first on Battalion IT Projects, summarises these projects and is a=mpanied by a copy of tlie Stage I Project Plan for the JT lnfmsr=.tre project. Later newsletters will include detais of the other projects and regular progress repons. Any comments or suggestions on this newsletter, or arry topic related to IT Battalion can be passed to myself or Philip Cook via Lotus Notes or telephone. Global IT Support 3.1 Svnopsi A common world wi,`e set of IT facilities (induding desktc.ozools, global business applications and NO 7ES) imposes new requirements for cc-ordinating and delivering service and suppor. to the business and individual managers. The objectives of this project are: - to define the elements of service and support required at a local, regional (or sub regional) and clb.zal level: - to define the serv~iice levels required: - to define what nee-s to be provided locally, regionally art_ centrally. 2.1 Svnopsis *us' NOTES' is our preferred mechanism for supporting e-mail and group working. With over 3,000 users across BAT, and rapidly growing, it is a key component of the Company's information processing and communication procedure. The Battalion NOTES Project has been established to develop and agree security and administration policies and procedures, together with a costed roll-out plan for agreement with the Battalion Business Team. The objective of this first stage of the project is to examine our current standards and procedures and put them forward for agreement or how they should be extended to meet Battalion requirements. 3.2 Proiect Team Paulo Almeida (Souza Cruz) Project Manager Nigel Hinton (PA Unsulting) Team Member Service Consultant (External - to be decided) 4.
