COMPL14DIUM OF EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDIES Meetinc neld at BAT Industries, Windsor House on 27 December~ 1984 Present: Mr. P. Sheehy Mr. E. E. A. Bruell Dr. R. E. Thornton The following points were noted: (1) It was re-affirmed that the aim of the compendium was to illustrate the range of material which supported the controversy on smoking issues. "Anomalies" would be identified but not rationalized. (2) Since completion of the draft compendium in November 1984 P. N. Lee had completed the first phase of a two year programme of cohort analysis. Results for each of the following countries UK, Northern Ireland, England and Wales, Scotland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Nether- lands, Germany, Austria, France, Canada, Australia, Japan, (for four diseases: lung cancer, larynx cancer, oesophageal cancer, iuchaemic heart disease) were now available. (3) Minor revisions were required to the compendium; when this was done Lee's additional results could be incor- porated together with any comments that might be received from other parties. This draft to be ready for the Chairman's CAC meeting in April 1985. (4) Other than Lee's work the compendium referred exclusively to published papers. For consistency publication of the compendium would require Lee publishing his results first. This was now under discussion, but publication was unlikely to be effected in less than six months. The alternative of a two volume compendium was considered (with cohort analysis as the second part) but the single volume approach was ~,rz?ferre~.. The following action plan was agreed; (1) A meeting to be held (early 1985) with Dr. 1. W. Hughes (B&W) , and representatives from BATIG (to be nominated; to discuss the compendium and to identify independent German and USA scientists to discuss it with. (2) Dr. F. J. C. Roe's offer to comment on the compendium to be accepted as soon as possible: Dr. Roe to report verbally on the compencium at a meeting to be arranged in Millbank. ................ Cont'd. CD BATCO document for Province of BritiSh columbia 10 Novernber 1999 (3) An additional view to ce obtained with esTecial reference to the epidemiological analyses (cohort analysis) from an independent scentist. RET to identify such an epidem- iologist possibly after consultation with Dr. higenzottam (Lee, Burch, Peto excluded from consideration). Ideally, discussions with someone _ike Lord Hunter might be considered. Alternatively, if availaLle, Dr. Froggatt could be considered. (4) Later stages in the development ot the compendium were discussed. Preliminary plans are as follows; a) It would be shown to other epidemiologists b) It would be shown to other tobacco companies who would be invited to join the project on a take-it or leave- it basis and within a defined timescale, perhaps a month. c) The document would then be 'published/used' selectively in discussions with appropriate authorities. (5) The above activities would proceed simultaneously with the incorporation of amendments into tne compendium. R. E.
