Dear Minister,
Our attention has been drawn to a part of the
comment which you made on
smoking and health during the 1. T. V. News at S.
5 0 p. m. on 16th January.
According to the transcript, you observed that "in
fairness to some of the
cigarette companies, they have recognized the
hazards to health. They recognize
that it kills a large number of people
prematurely. "
This is not the case. The manufacturers have never
made judgments on
medical matters, nor is it their function to do
so. They have cc-operated ivith
Government in making known its views on smoking
and health to the public. They
have act expressed views of their own and
certainly not the views which you attributed
to them.
The purpose of this letter is to put the true
position, and one which you have
recognized, on the record.
