a Standing Scientific Liaison Committee, to advise
on the scientific aspects or smoking and health.

its tasks was to "devise satisfactory methods of

yield of the various hrnnds of cigarettes on the

is not a matter on which I have sought advice from
the industry. The participaLiOn of the industry
members in this Report has been directcd to the
complex proI)Lem involved in ri-.-scssing the tar
and
nicuLinQ yields of cigarettes and cu considering
the most effective way of conveying the results to
the public.
In general we have beeit able to acccpt the
Committee's
report. It endorses the valtic oC encouraging
those
who cannOL stop alrUgCLhcr to choosc brands with a
lower Lur and nicotine vield and it suggcQts
satis-
