COMMENT ON SPECIFIC WORK AREAS WORK AREA 01: DIOWGICAL A program has to be developed to handle Project Rio. It Is hoped that this will draw on the existing program ratherthandevelop a line of invasti- gation that is in addition to the existing program as has tended to happen with special projects in the last year. Zie development of a cigarette of low biological activity must surely be the basic objective of Axea 01 anyway. This general area is an important one for the Long term survival of the industry and as such we support it. About 12% of the research effort goes into this area. (It is the second largcst area) . We would feel this effort is large but reasonable. Our relatively lower priority rankings reflect the relativc urgency of areas as well as importance. We home tho fundamental studies of Project 01 (b) will continua at the love!. of cffort shown and not be constantly put back by the shorter term (and more immediate results) of Project 01 (a) Work areas 01-03 to 01-07 have 0.2 to 0.3 of a graduate per project. Could we have taken on too many projects to do any one justice? WORK AREA 02: FILTERS The emohasis should be or. understanding the basis of filtration and the filter/hurnan interaction. Now filters should only be developed as a concept until a need is clearly defined and it is established that GR&DC and not the operating company is in tJ&e best position to commercialise the filters. A selective filter, ezpccially for nitrosamizies, must sti.11 remain art improtant objective. WORK APEA 03: NITROSAMINES C=) As Australia is a flu,3 c-ared market, nitrosamines are not as important. Howcv,-,r, Uicy are important from the group point of view. We are not in favour -MI. CD 1983 Br.t.-;h Amcrican Tob..cco Co. Ltd. Thi-. must no. t.-c crq'ie'i ownhown to tonautharised pcrsons. BAT Co LTD - MINNESOTA TOBACCO LITIGATION -2- of doing much work on how cultural Practices affect nitrosamines. Generally such knowledge could not selectively benefit the BAT group. We wonder if the program should show a project aimed specifically at deproteinising tobacco to reduce nitrosarLines. WORK AREA 05: COMBUSTION We think that 6% of the research effort is about right for combustion studies. it is a slow process where the need is seen long before it is ful- filled. There are seven models =der devalopment/validation. We think the sidastream model and the SES tnodel are particularly important. Although there could be a loss of seredipity we wonder if more effort should be put on less models. Again the importance of validating models over as wide a range as possib1c, or else of defining the limits of Enodels, is obvious but this of course takes time. WORK APLEA OG: SIDESTREA14 It is iniLzortant to unravel the consum--r's perception of sidastream visibility, irritation and flavour to be sure our efforts in paper manufacture and chemical research have clearly defined objectives. WORK APTA 07: SM.0r_C RCTENTrON/11UMAN SMOKING This is a very interesting area of long term research, but I do not think we can afford to give it a greater percentage of the research resources than it has already. WORK AREA 09: PSYC710LOGY AND SENSORY TZSTING I believe there is a dynamic team doing a good job in this area. The work on sidci;trt_-a-n is particularly important while we would agree that the work an Letn,-arature and humidity should not b-- extended. 1?31 01 illill American Tobucco Co. Ltd. We are hopeful that the work an terpenes will eventually give us useful flavour compounds. In the short term I was particularly impressed by the success in the body/mouthfeel area. WORK AREA 10: LEAF AND BIOTECHNOLOGY I was impressed by the way this section formed a team and interacted with others. The efforts on mapping/fingerprinting, although lengthy and difficult, seem to be producing results. I am concerned about the Cylproc process. I believe delegates' interest was in that it may increase our understanding of nit--osaminc formation, rather than in the process itself. This requires a review of the goals and plan of t1his project. @-,'ORY, A RE A 11: TOBACCO PROCESSING As has been traditional, we strongly support this area of research. Those involved seem to be coming to grips w the parameters that effect drying and cigarette properties. Although not specifically mentioned, the work on the Infra-Alyzer seems to be very successful. WORK AREA 12: TOBACCO EXPANSION The prospects do not look good for this project but since we were late entering this area I think we must allow it to proceed for a further year and then review whether or not it should continue. WORK AREA .13: NOVEL CIGARETTE MAKING TCCHIIOLOGY There is no shortage of iclc as, only of markets to cxploit the Ideas has it not always been so? 19,1:3 British Americno Tob3cco Co. BAT Co LTD - MINNESOTATOBACCOLITIGATION -4- WORK AREA 14: PROCESS CONTROL AND PHYSICAL TEST METHOD DEVELOPMENT The work on variability requires a knowledge of consumer attitudes to variability of different physical parameters. if possible, this work should be *expedited to enable a clearer formulation of goals in this area. Conformity of laboratory test equipment is a problem with laboratories buying varied equipment from different makers. The difficulties are numerous but there must be a better and faster way of defining a need, designing equip- ment to meet the agreed need and building it or deciding on an outside supplier's instrument, sufficiently quickly to allow some hope of laboratory equipment conformity. WORK AR'-':'A 15: CHEMICAL TEST METHOD DEVELOPMENT AND ANALYTICAL PROJECTS These back-room boys do an invaluable job in backing up the work of the other research sections or the operating laboratories.
