Discussions in Staines with J Rembiszewski, D Bacon, R Ferris- Decision to talk to Stowic Resources in further detail. Transdermal nicotine seen as 'ble parallel activity to cigarette smoking but legal position needs possi clarification. 2. Stowic Resources havc accepted in"ritar;on to --isit Staines for fimher discussions (date to be arranged). 3. Prof D Warburton (Reading University) has agreed to examine Nicotinell patches in a behavioural study. This will determine the efficacy of such patches (in smokers) in terms of performance in vigilance tasks. The experiment has been submitted for ethical approval to Reading University. 4. Nicotinell is likely to be marketed in the U.Y_ shortly. It is possible that it will require approval by the committee for safety on medicines. The chairman (Professor M Rawlins, University of Newcastle) is known to RET and an attempt is being made to seek an informal meeting to ascertain what considerations the comrnirree might apply to the use ofnicorine parches. NB. Nicotinell patches are manufactured by Ciba-Geigy and are on sale in New Zealand. Stowic Resources claimed to have developed a superior product and approached BAT.
