DGF/IW1i/-r%49M/68 11th April 1968. WARTERLY REPORT JANUARY - MARCH 1968 INTRODUCTION In view of the importance attached to the design and development of bonded low density granular filters, which has been a major effort during the last quarter, some other projects have necessarily been somewhat delayed. The success achieved in this area of work led to visits to the Establishment by Dr. J.G. Esterle of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation, Louis~ille, and Dr. V.C. Runeckles, Mr. L.A. Rowell, Mr. S. Candlish and Mr. D. English of Imperial Tobacco of Canada.Ltd., Montreal. Work on filtration is now to be concentrated on practical means of incorporating water in filters. '7 he oQzoperation between Marketing Dept. Millbank, and R. & D.E. hAs led to the establishment in Millbank of a further Taste and Flavour Working Par-ty, using the technique developed within R. & D.E. During the quarter, P. Curson attended the Junior Management Course at Chelwood. Dr. R.G. Hook's secondment to Management Services Dept. was made permanent. At the end of the period under review, Mr. C.N. Burnett retired after nearly 7 years at R. & D.E. and a career covering 38 years with the B-A.T. Group. The Establishment will miss his helpful co-operation but is fortunate in that Mr. A.W.G. Smeed will replace him as Manufacturing Section C. Head. BATCo document for Province of British Columbia I I November 1999 PROJECT 1000 RESEARCH INVESTIGATION WITH SHORT TEF44 OBJECTIVES 1100 Tobacco Studies (Miss C.W. Ayers) (1) The testing of analytical procedures for TRC using tobacco samples supplied by Carreras has continued. (S.R. Evelyn) (6) A report has been issued on the compariscn of burn rates of U.K. and Continental pipe tobaccos. 1200 Smoke Studies (Miss C.W. Ayers) (1) The collaborative T.R.C. test carried out in tne (A.W. Cronshaw) I.T. Co. (Bristol) laboratories has been completed. Using identical experimental conditions, the personnel from the various companies showed that good agree:-..en~ was obtained for the analysis of T.P.M., nicotine alkaloids and water. The statistical analysis of results has continued. (2) No JANIJS samples were analysed tMs quarter. (D.J. Wood) (3) The examination of further Belgian cigarettes (Miss C.W. Ayers) treated by the French process is under way. This (A.W. Cronshaw) exercise has been undertaken to determine whe-Lher -.,-ends suggested by the analytical results obtained with --rE first sample of treated Belgian cigarettes are valid. 16 oo Evaluation of Commercial Cigarettes (S.R. Evelyn) (1) A report has been issued on the evaluation of (D.J. Wood) (Miss C.W. Ayers) the Dutch brands. (A.R. Cousins) (2) A preliminary evaluation of Venezuelan cigaret-Les has been undertaken. C>~ BATCO document for Province of Brifth Columbia 11 November 1999 PROJECT 2000 2100 (A.R. Cousins) (Miss C.W. Ayers) (F. Hnslam) (A.W. Cronshaw) (Miss C.W. Ayers) 2200 (K.D. Kilburm) (C. Valentine) (S.R. Evelyn) ANALYTICAL RESEARCH S=IES Tobacco (7) A report has been issued describing the use and limitations of the methylene blue test for blend analysis. Although the test may, in some cases, give an indication of the proportion of flue-cured tobacco in a blend, it cannot be recommended for routine use. (8) The work on the re-appraisal of the methods for measuring total nicotine alkaloid content has been started. She re-appraisal covers G.L.C. methods as well as those of Willits, and Cundiff and Markunas. (9) Work comparing the various methods of defining atmospheric moisture content has been completed. (10) A report has been issued on the determination of selenium in tobacco and cigarette paper. Smoke (6) The interpretation of the chart spectra, sent by A.E.I., has been completed. However, no progress can be reported on the computer processing of the spectra, since A.E.I. have been using the PDP-8 computer for their own internal projects. (9) A first report has been issued on the mass balance of C-14 activity added to cigarettes. The apparatus and collection system works well and gives recoveries of the order of 85-95%. (12) Further experiments with the artificial mouth have indicated the amount of nicotine retained from BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 11 November 1999 the smoke of certain cigarettes, for example a cigarette with an efficient carbon filter, is less than would have. been predicted from the pH of the smoke. Because of these findings, the report will be delayed until next quarter. (B.B. Chakraborty) (14) The G.L.C. equipment essential for the analysis (R.E. 7hornton) of aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons was delivered and is being evaluated. (?.A. Curson) (15) A report has been Issued on the naming of gas chromatography peaks by a computer. (K.D. Kilburn) (16) Work on the three-dimensional model of the inter-relationships of smoke from various tobaccos has continued and is almost complete. Uhe coordinates for the smoke samples are not dependent upon a particular mathematical convention provided it is applied consistently. NIss C.W. Ayers) (17) The automated method developed for the determination of ammonia in tobacco could not be used for smoke, because of interference from other amines and aldehydes. Modifi- cation of the automated method was unsatisfactory, and consequently G.L.C. methods are now being investigated. (P.A. Curson) (18) Work has started this quarter on the examination of the spline functions for calculating carbon numbers. However, it is delayed at present due to the absence of Mr. Curson on the Intermediate Management Course at Chelwood. L_ r1 ON BATCO document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 11 November 1999 -5- 211,00 Other Materials (C. Valentine) (1) The difficulties experienced in the reduction of myosm1ne have been overcome and the first stages of the synthesis of C14-nicotine are now under way. (Miss C.W. Ayers) (2) The following ter-penes have been purified (using (Mrs. S.L. Vekris) the Perkin Elmer F21 Autoprep): a-pinene, I imonene, a-thujene, and p-cymene. Infra-red and mass sp-~ctra have been recorded. 24 co Development of Squipnent (K.D. Kilburn) (1) A new type of wide-dynamic range amplifier manufactured by Infotronics Corporation, Texas, has been examined. It is suitable for use with G.L.C. flame detectors operated with packed column systems, but not capillary systems. Its use will reduce the cost, and simplify the general introduction of computer processed G.L.C. to laboratories with access to a medium-sized computer. A report has been issued. PROJECT 3000 FACTORS AFFECTING S40KE GEENERATION ,31C0 The Effects of Tobacco (A.A. CoLMins) (1) A report has been issued on the fractionation of soluble nitrogen compounds in tobaccos of different type. (3) Two further sugar/amino acid complexes have been synthesised. The effect on smoke aroma of adding complexes of this sort to cigarettes is being evaluated by the Taste and Flavour Working Party. (Miss C.W. Ayers) (7) A report has been issued describing thework carried out at R. & D.E. on the determination of oxides of nitrogen in smoke. C>1 C7 \ BATCo document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 11 November 1999 -b- (H.F. Dymond) (8) The smoke from cigarettes made from flue-cured tobacco, Burley tobacco, and a 50 : 50 flue -cu red/Burl ey blend, has been examined by the G.L.C. scan technique. Approximately 80% of the peaks from the blend are the arithmetical sum of the contributions of the constituent tobaccos. The other peaks are being studied. (Miss C.W. Ayers) (9) Various methods for the determination of total sulphur in smoke have been investigated. So far, little success can be reported; the work continues. (A.R. Cousins) (10) Me polyphenol-nitrogen fractions from flue-cured, Burley and dark fermented tobaccos are being studied using Sephadex chromatography and an AutoAnalyser which continuously and simultaneously monitors for phenolic and Primary amino groups. Analysis of nitrogen in sub-fractions obtained from these experiments has confirmed earlier findings which were based on separation of the sub-fractions using their colour. The Effects of Culture and ?rocess (D.J. Wood) (4) The report has been issued on the 1966 Greenhouse (R. Comber) (Miss C.W. Ayers) Experiment. (D.J. Wood) (5) Cigarettes have been manufactured from tobacco produced in the 1967 Greenhouse Experiment (Hicks variety cultured with varying lo&ds of nitrogen). Examination of tobacco and smoke composition has corLnenced. (6) Seed has been sown for a further greenhouse experiment, the purpose of which is to Investigate the effect of nitrogen level on the leaf and smoke composition of a Burley variety. \ Or*) C-S BATCO document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 11 November 1999 PROJECT 6ooo APPLICATION OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS b210 Air Dryers (F.
