Schiff (Research Department, The I.T.Co. of Canada), and Mr. J. Sismey (Research Department, The U.T.Cos. (South, Johannesburg) visited this Establishment; apart from general interest, one purpose of their visits was to discuss the taste and flavour technique developed by the R. & D.E. Working Party. Mr. N.E. Willis attended a course at Wilton Park, and Dr. K.D. Kilburn took part In a seminar on 'Management in Research and Development' run by Urwick, Orr & Partners. Ayers) (1) No tobacco samples have been received from T.R.C. during this quarter. 1200 Smoke Studies (miss C.W. Ayers) (1) A cross-check on methods for the determination of hydrogen cyanide has been carried out at the Instigation of T.R.C. (2) No cigarette samples have been examined during the quarter under Project JANUS. (Miss C.W. Ayers) (3) A report has been issued reviewing the results of (Mr. D.J. Wood) various experiments in which air-cured tobacco used in Belgian cigarettes has been treated by the French Process. 1300 Filter Studies (H.G. Horsewell) (1) A sample of LUCKY FILTERS cigarettes is being examined; the results obtained so far indicate that the filter does not show any unsuspected filtrational characteristics. (2) A sample of R.6 cigarettes In iiing examined. This cigarette has an acidic filter. (H.G. Thornton) (2) Work is in hand for the preparation of a handbook dealing with the design of cigarettes with known deliveries of TPM and nicotine. 1600 Evaluation of Commercial Cixarettes (R. & D.E.) (6) Physical examination of Venezuelan cigarette brands is complete. Analysis of tobacco and smoke, and sensory assessment of the smoking characteristics, are being carried out. (7) A range of cigarette brands from Argentina and Guatemala are being submitted to a detailed examination. PROJECT 2000 ANALYTICAL RESEARCH STUDIES 2100 Tobacco (Miss C.W. Ayers) (8) Study of a radioactive tracer method, for (J.G. Underwood) Investigating the effect of an acid predistillation on the determination of total nicotine alkaloids in tobacco, has commenced. (A.R. Cousins) (9) A test for determining the proportions of flue-cured and air-cured tobaecos in a cigarette, which is much more rapid than the methylene blue test, has been devised. Its reliability is currently being tested on various grades of lamina and stem. (J.D. Backhurst) (10) The possibility of detecting and identifying volatile additives on competitors' cigarettes by a G.L.C. technique is being investigated. Ayers) (11) A method has been developed for detecting lactic and tartario acids on tobacco. A number of competitors' cigarette brands are being screened for the possible presence of these acids. 2200 Smoke (R.E. Thornton) (14) The development of a method for determining (B.B. Chakraborty) individual aromatic. polycyclic: hydrocarbons in smok~-- has been completed and a report issued. (H.F. Dymond) (19) Experimental work nn the identification of G.L.C. peaks has been concluded; the results are disappointing. (P.A. Curson) (20) A new computer programme to convert punched paper data onto magnetic tape is being used on a routine basis. An advanced version for monitoring equipment performance is under development. (Miss G.W. Ayers) (21) A G.L.C. method has been developed which gives a good separation of the principal bases found in smoke, when tested on pure substances. (P.A. Curson) (22) The Rothamsted multidimensional scaling programme has been translated for use on an IBM 360 computer. (23) A direct translation of the G.L.C. computer programmes is being tested on the IBM _360 computer. (H.F. Dymond) (24) Work has commenced on extending the existing method for the determination of acrolein and acataldehyde in smoke to include other compounds, with emphasis on known irritants. Chakraborty) (25) An attempt is being made to develop a quick method (based on fluorescence) for determining total aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons in smoke. 2300 Other Materials O.G. Underwood) (2) The synthesis of nicotine-21-14C has been re-examined. Good yields have now been obtained in all but one of the stages of the synthetic sequence. (A.R. Cousins) (3) A report has been issued describing the effect on smoking characteristics produced by adding to cigarettes a mixture of by-products from the sugar-amino acid reaction. (10) and (11) Further experimental work on enzymically-formed polyphenol-nitrogen compounds has been found necessary, and this has delayed the report which was scheduled for this quarter.-- 3120 The Effects of Culture and Process (D.J. Wood) (5) The report on the 1967 greenhouse experiment has been still further delayed because of the unprogrammed work under 3-300. (D.J. Wood) (6) Tobacco from the 1968 greenhouse experiment has (R. Further additives are now being tested, and some of these appear promising. (H.F. Dymond) (6) Sufficient tobacco to make a small batch of cigarettes has been coated with aluminium. The effect of this treatment on smoke chemistry will be evaluated. PROJECT 3200 THE PROPERTIES OF THE SMOKE AEROSOL 3210. Characterisation of the Aerosol (R.B. Richardson) (1) Work is proceeding with physical measurements on the particle size fractions-of smoke condensate, and with the measurement of mass distributions on smoke which has passed through various types of filter. 3220 Deposition of the Aerosol (R.B. Richardson) (2) Little progress has been made on filtration of (R.B. Dagnall) synthetic aerosol owing to concentrationlon other projects. 3230 Physical ProDerties of Deposited Aerosol (R.B. Riohardson) (1) Smoke particles deposited on film of known thickness are being examined by quantitative electron microscopy, resulting in accurate measurements of contact angles. The particle spreading is being relat*d to the original size of the partioles. PROJECT 3300 SMOKE QUAL17Y 3320 The Establishment of ObAective Techniaues for Aasessins Smoke Quality (D.E. Creighton) (2) The report due this quarter has been delayed, pending a atatiatioal examination of som of the A0 BATCo document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 11 November 1999 -7- results. (3) Equipment for measuring puff profile is on order, but has not yet been delivered. (4) Physiological response to four cigarette brands which differ in nicotine delivery is being monitored; an impedance pneumograph is being used to measure the depth of inhalation, and filter-tip Analysis is hoped to give information concerning nicotine intake. 3330 The Relationship Between Smoke Composition and Smoke Quality (D.J. Wood) (9) The report due this quarter has been delayed because of unprogrammed work mentioned below. (D.J. Wood) (11) A number of sensory assessments for irritation (J.D. Backhurst) have been carried out, and attempts will be made to relate these to smoke chemistry. Assessment of the effects produced by added irritants is expected to commence shortly. (J.D. Backhurst) (12) The sensory effects of several traditional (R.E. Thornton) ameliorants are being investigated, incollaboration with Leaf Department and Market Research Department. The first phase of the exercise involves the examination of three cigarette brands with and without ameliorants; limited smoke analysis will be undertaken. Unproxammed (D.J. Wood) A report has been issued reviewing the progress which has been made in teaching the Working Party's assessment 1-4 BATCo document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 11 November 1999 -8- technique to various panels, and describing the technique as currently practised. (D.J. Wood) During the quarter a member of the Research Department (J.D. Backhurst) of the Imperial Tobacco Company of Canada spent four weeks at R. & D.E. for instruction in the sensory assessment of cigarette smoke. Several days were also spent explaining the principles of the method to other visitors. PROJECT 3400 SELECTIVE FILTRATION 3410 The Study of Filter Materials (Miss M.G. Ivinson) (7) A complete specification for polyurethan fe fibre filters has been filed in the U.K. (H.G. Horsewell) (8) A report has been issued covering the work (T.W. Tolman) carried out on granular filters. Various means of improving the performance of granular-filters are suggested including ways of increasing the filtration of vapour phase smoke constituents. (H.G. Horsewell) (9) Methods of producing granular filters by a cold bonding process are being studied. (H.G. H~'rsewell) (10) The work carried out previously on filters (T.W. Tolman) containing water is being extended to cover filters containing additives other than P.E.I. The affect of changing the tobacco type in the cigarettes is being included. Dymond) (13) The first report on the investigation of PEI/Water filters by the G.L.C. scan has been issued. Further work to elucidate mechanisms of filtration has been started. (H.G. Horsewell) (14) A study is in progress considering the effects of combining zinc acetate and ethylenediamine diacetate. 3430. Filtration of Specific Compounds (T.W. Tolman) (4) The work on filters for oxides of nitrogen has been completed to an interim point. A report has been Issued and further work will continue. (J.G. Underwood) (5) The examination of a further series of filters has (B.B. Chakraborty) again failed to reveal any evidence for the selective Haslam) filtration of benzpyrene. (T.W. Tolman) (6) Work has commenced on the search for filters and filter additives for removal of carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke. Attention is being given'to transition metal complexes. 3440 The Mechanism of Selective F11traticn (R.B. Daj;all) (1) Various theories concerning the pressure drop of (H.G. Horsewell) fibrous and granular filters are being brought together in the form of a review. PROjECT 3500 BIOLOGICAL S`rUDIES 3510 Bioassay Studies (R. Comber) (8) Work on the chemical transformation of cells has been delayed while awaiting equipment. 7 BATCo document for Province of BritiSh Columbia 11 November 1999 -10- (S.R. Evelyn) (9) Development of an assay based on the oytotoxic (R. Comber) action of the cyclohoxane fraction of smoke on chicken embryo calls is proceeding satisfactorily. (R. Comber) (11) A first report has been issued on a hyperplasia test based on the chorioallantoic membrane of hens' eggs. Work is continuing under 3515. (12) A report has been issued describing further investigations of the Paramecium solution test. (R. Comber) (13) With the aim of investigating the effect of smoke on the ability of human embryo lung cells to divide, work is in hand to establish the optimum initial cell number and culture period. (E.B. Wilkes) (14) Some progress has been made in the writing of a (R.B. D&gnall) computer programme for part of the analysis of long-term biological experiments. The results of JANUS BO have been briefly reviewed. (R. Comber) (15) In order to eliminate interference from solvent in the chorioallantoic membrane test, attempts are being made to &pply a dispersion of smoke in tissue culture medium, and also to test the smoke coagulate which issues from the capillary press. 3520 Physioloxical Studies (S.R. Evelyn) (2) and (3) These projects are being combined since, in most cases, the methods of collection and analysis will be specific to the compounds being examined. Some of the analytical difficulties have been overcome, but (7'-- BATCo document for Province of British Columbia I I November 1999 -l1- the puff duplicator I. still not operating satisfactorily. (4) A report has been issued on the retention of nicotine and phenols in the human mouth. The results indicate that the model system gives a good approximation of the trends which cam be expected in the human. 3530 Microbioloaical Studies (T.G. Mitchell) (1) Work on methods for studying the microbiology of tobacco processing is almost complete. For sampling cases of lamina satisfactory results have been obtained using & stainless steel tube attached to an electric drill. (T.G. Mitchell) (2) An investigation of the effect at primary manufacture on the quantitative microbiology of lamina and stem has commenced. This includes a study of the microbial flora of the air In the primary'manufacturing department, using settle plates. Work will be delayed due to Mr. Mitchell's illness. PROJEOT 4100 THE OPTIMISATION A10 COM'ROL OF TOBACCO FROCESSM 4110 Leaf and IArina ProAssiniz (R.W. Hodge) (1) Some prelimary recommendations on the investigation of process flown are being made on the basis of results to date. 4120 Stem Processinx (R.W. Wilkes) (2) The method of element analysis has been studied and is being applied to results obtained from experiments in Development Hall No. 2. 4130 Cut Tobacco (R.W. Hedge) (2) The work on pneumatic cooler design has been written up and circulated in the form of a data review. (5) Tests in the examination of cooler performance are progressing satisfactorily. (R.W. Hedge) (6) In a study of mixing in process equipment useful camp& risons are being obtained between different 4140 (A.E. Yallup) 4150 (A.W. Cronshaw) types of cut tobacco drying equipment. Instrumentation for Plant Control (2) Infra-red temperature measurement experiments to determine the emisaivities of tobacco materials have been started. The programme is hold up due to a breakdown of the Barnes Infra-red thermometer equipment. Before repairs can be affected, circuit diagrams are awaited from the U.S.A. Quality Measurement for Product Control (4) The handbook on st"ard test procedure used in R. & D.E., Q.C., was issued. (5) Procedures and methods of measuring moisture- content in cases of lamina and atom together with the variation in moisture.content within the oases are being investigated. CIV BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 11 November 1999 -13. (A.E. Yallup) (6) Tests have been completed on strips of flue (A.W. Conshaw) cured lamina designed to examine the temperature coefficient of the dielectric type electrical moisture measurement in the range 10% to 14% moisture content and over the tobacco temperature range 23*C'to 5-~C- Tests have been set up at Delhi, Canada, to examine the possibilities of using the B-A.T. continuous moisture meter to measure the moisture content of flue cured strips immediately after an apron type strips dryer. Draft Standard Test Procedures were prepared for the "Microwave measurement of moisture in cases of tobacco in the Redrying Plant" and the "Kappa AB.61 measurement of moisture of tobacco after redrying". These standard test procedures were discussed with Mr. Cartmell during his visit to R. & D.E. and will be applied in the current redrying siason in CAnada. PROJECr 4200 THE OPTIMISATION AND CONTROL OF CIGARE11TE MANUPACTURE 421M The Effects of Tobacco Properties . (F. Russell) (1) An investigation of tobacco temperature at making is being applied to the SM. The scheduled report has been delayed pending consideration of Information frve an outside supplier. 4220 The wffoot of the Machine (miss M.G. Cronshaw) With the cooperation of S.C.L. a conversion/calibration has been obtained for the R. & D.E. paper porosity instrument in terms of the B-A.T. style instrument at S.C.L. A series of meetings have been held at Molins to discuss the Mark 9 making machine and the test prograr=e. 4240 Instrumentation and Machine Control (A.E. Yallup) (3) Work has been completed on-the measurement of tobacco moisture at entry to rod and a continuous moist-are meter has been fitted to the rails section of a ,Mk-9 M.C.M. The report scheduled for this quarter has been delayed due to work on 4156. (R.0. Bryant) (6) Work has continued on the prototype gravimetric weight control for Mk.8 m.C.m. It has been established that weight control drift is due to temperature rise effect on the weigher's mechanism. A controlled heater has been fitted to the weigher. Interlock circuit layouts have been modified and a weight indicating meter added - all eleotronic controls working well. Cigarette making tests have been done. (8) After a thorough investigation the data logger's BATCo document for Province of British Columbia 11 November 1999 -15- facilities have been modified in conjunction with Westinghouse Brake & Signal Co. Design work involving o, storing of alarm signals" will be carried out at R. & D.E. These modifications will yield more flexibility and greater utilisation. 4250 Quality Measurement and Inspection (A.W. Cronshaw) (2) Moline have fitted a wedge type absorber to the scanning head of the scintillation counter type.weight control in an attempt to overcome the drift problem. This in being evaluated. Conway) (9) Experiments have been completed on optimizing (M. Foster) heater profile design for maximum shelf life of polypropylene overwra~pped H.L. packs. Tests are continuing on the effect of this on the shelf-life of 200a units and on improving the temperature control of the overwrap heat sealers. 4320 Study of Carton Materials (N. Poster) (4) A aeries of tests have been carried out meazuring hinged lid pack rigidity as a function of basis weight and caliper. (D.E. Conway) (5) The examination of paper and foil rigidity has been completed. It in intended to attempt to relate material properties to the overall pack properties. (N. It is unlikely that the application will be completed, but the situation is under continuous review. 4340 Bonding and Finishes (Miss M.G. Ivinson) (3) Information for the completion of the application relating to the print register control system is being collected. No decision on overseas filings has yet been reached. 4350 Product Develonment - Cigarettes (N. Foster) (1) Work has been proceeding on the production of sample units for estimation of shelf-life properties and for determination of ease of access. An appraisal of the possible application of existing packing machinery to produce a sealed inner bundle has been carried out. (N. Foster) (2) An evaluation of the effect of the packing process an the quality of cigarettes has been carried out. The main parameters studied were cigarette weight and tobacco moisture content. Unprogrammed (D.E. Conway) (a) General investigations are continuing, as and when time permits, on the development of a satisfactory head space analysis or any other analytical method which could assist in the studies on flavour performance on packed cigarettes. PROJECT 44CO FILTER MANUFAC7URE 4410 Preliminary Studies (miss M.G. Ivinson) (6) A Complete Specification covering bonded low density filters has been filed. (F. Haslam; (7) Work on Project BATEAU is continuing. Supplies (D.E. Conway) (H.G. Horsewell) of spherical capsules have recently been secured. (miss M.G. Ivinson) (8) Provisional Applications will be prepared for filing as new inventions occur under Project BATEAU. 4420 Improvement of Existinm Process (F. Hasl&m, (1) Work on seam slip during filter manufacture has been written up in the form of a file note. (2) The problem of optimising acetate fil-.er design is being examined in order to determine the economic Implications. 4430 Machine Development (F. Hasla=, (5) A report has been issued on the manufacture of flock filters from viscose staple grafted with P.E.I. (7) A report has been issued on the performance of the Mexican cone applicator. The question of improved firmness at low plasticiser application levels is being further studied. (J.K. Milm-er) (8) An attachment is being developed to enable BArEAU filters to be assembled on a Molins D.A.PTC machine. (9) An investigation has been carried out into suitable materials for the manufacture of resin ended capsules for Project BATEAUT. A Mk-5 cutting head has been adapted for cutting the plastic tube and the resin dipping machinery is currently being assembled, together with the linking transfer conveyors. ASSESSMENT OF NEW EQUIPMENr Primary Plant (2) A report has been issued on the screenless cooler experiments in Liverpool Branch Factory. PackaginR Machines (1) Tests on the Molina H.L. packer with a 24-pocket. drum have been delayed due to incorrect-dimensions of the drum pockets. Molina are preparing a new drum. MODIFIED TOBACCO AND NEW SMOKING MATERIALS General (2) The construction of a miniature Fourdrinier paper machine has been completed. (3) The commissioning of the above machine is being undertaken in conjunction with the evaluation of reconstituted tobacco smoking materials (5200). (6) A report has been issued on the evaluation of cigarettes made from blends of Schweitzer L.T.H.F. reconstituted tobacco with E2E grade of flue-cured tobacco. (R.N.M. Barrett) (7) Work has commenced on an evaluation of nitric (R.E. Thornton) acid pulping of both stem and lamina to use in the production of reconstituted tobacco. (8) An examination has been undertaken of the parameters which influence the formation and properties of tobacco reconstituted by a paper process. Milner) (5) The parts for Honduras were eventually received from the sub-eontractors at the end of October and have now been tested and despatched. (6) Tripoli are now using on*" of the anchor wrap materials that gave good results in the original GUNNER exercise.
