Mrs. M. Ayles GS/DM/46D G. Smith 16 th June, 1988 I understand from our discussions that you wish to evaluate the influence of a number of additives applied at the 10% level to cigarettes. Each additive is to be added singly and it is proposed that in limited panel testing any one panelliet will smoke a maximum of 20 cigarettes. The additives you listed are as follows: 1. Lactic Acid Allowed at the 2% level by the ISCSIT (4th Report). As your proposed level is 5 x above this value it would be prudent to evaluate on intermediate level first in order to ensure there is no adverse reaction. 2. Potassium Sorbate In general use potassium sorbate is applied at levels of less than 1%, it is thus unlikely that a 10% inclusion could be recommended without more detailed evaluation such as smoke chemistry. The ISCSTI allow potassium sorbate at O.S%. 3. Promlens Glvcol Maximum level permitted by the ISCSIT is 6%, however it may be included at 10% for limited panel testing. 4. Glvcerol Allowed by the ISCSH at up to 10% thus may be evaluated an described. The level of inclusion requested in an order of magnitude greater than generally agreed limits (exception is glycerol). I also understand that changes in smoke chemistry may include increased formaldehyde delivery and, in blended products# hydrogen cyanide. Thus full consideration should be given to using an low a levol of additive an possible to meet the alms of the project. In addition, due to the elevated levels, taking the work further would call for more detailed smoke chemistry, plus other supporting evidence to show that the modification is acceptable. 455;e c.c: Dr. R.R.
