PP&D Project Objective: To provide support to BATCo Operating Companies to aid the introducton of the DEER process. Current Status: The BTC DEER plant is scheduled for installation by the end of January 1993. All the Key Tasks involving the use of this process will commence once the plant has been fully commissioned. Key Tasks: 1 Conduct trials for Operating Companies, as necessary (on-going). 2. Provide technical assistance to Operating Companies utillsing the DEER process and continue to monitor BAT Group wide operations (on-going). 3. Commission Corby DEER plant and provide a training programme for process operators. (Consumer test cigarettes for China have been manufactured and shipped- Tests are due to be completed by February 1993 and, dependent on the results, commissioning will proceed once BATCo. UK give the go ahead). 0 01993BATCo.Ltd. Do not copy or show to unauthorised persans- CD CD L4 0%. DEER technology transfer to Imperial Tobacco Company Continued (UK). (All trials for Imperial have been completed and quantities of DEER, of two blend recipes. manufactured. Final analyses an the product were forwarded to Imperial, and further work depends on their response). Should follow-up be required. commissioning and training of operators at Imperial (Nottingham) will be undertaken at their request. 5. 5heet Cotimisation 1 This aspect of Project DEER is to determine the effect of particle size and its effect on performance through the extruder. Initial studies on grinding offal to less than 0.25 mm have proved promising and final DEER sheet thickness can be reduced to around 0.4 mm. "Best" operating conditions in terms of sheet strength and optimum filling value will be determined in a series of runs in which offal has been ground to particles of sizes varying between 0.25 and 1.00 mm - (First quarter of 1993, once the BTC DEER plant is operational). 6. Sheet ODtimisation 2 The Canadian work on pre-hydration will be evaluated (second quarter of 1993). If successful, the pre- hydration techniques will be combined with the *best" particle size conditions from Key Task 5, and the resulting material evaluated (third quarter of 1993). 7. A new process of pelletising the extrudate and flaking the pellets will be evaluated (mid 1993). The intention is that the flaked pellets will be added to blends prior to cutting. CASING APPLICATTON - Complete 1992 project work - full physical, chemical and sensory analysis. - Report. - Offer technique to operating companies as method of improving casing application. Cr,% 1 CD _c:- CD BATCo document for Legal Services : Health Canada 19 October 1999 2 - Consider whether using technique for determining goodibad casing we should deliberately manufacture extremes to evaluate any sensory differences. . HTD - Possible design and installation of R&D machine should all go well in Singapore. . CUFF If successful in Bangladesh new mill to be installed. Work to concentrate on cigar filler, Agrinion. Evaluate alternative heating systems to reduce milling moisture content Consider possible maker developments. . MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY Ceramics are now used throughout industry for things like cutting blades etc. These are longer lastina materials than those currently used in the :0 tobacco industry. ivaluate these materials for wear life including clearance through AMGP. ALTERNATIVE HEATINGADRYING, - Evaluate alternative heating/drying systems w.rt- determining product and/or process advantages e.g., R.F., Microwave dryingtheating. STRAND LENGTH - Complete 1992 project work particularly w.rt. manufacture of cigarettes with distinctly different strand length/strand size distributions to determine the efrects of strand length on product performance. - Should longer s=d length prove to be beneficial for products then explore methods of limiting degradation at maldng e.g. heated hoppers. SEMEDDED STEM Conduct trials for operating companies as required. DEER Conduct trials for operating companies. Continue monitoring of group wide operations and provide assistance where required. Evaluate Canadian work on pre-hydration. Continue thin sheet work and assess suitability of rolled pellet materials. In conjunction with Technical Services continue to evaluate new materials with a view to improving wear life and reducing operating costs. Shouldthe Imperial deal go through, ensure smooth transfer of technology. CwC~b ~, - 4CA P 2. Snonsored bv UK Factories PRIMARY DE-BOTTLENECKING - Assist the factory in Southampton to determine maximum possible throughput through PMD.
