Publish in Journals that Support Open Access

Some publishers are committed to publishing journals at fair prices. Many other publishers offer alternative publishing options such as Open Access (OA) -- free access to entire journals or selected articles. Authors can maximize the reach and impact of their research, reduce access barriers, and retain quality control of their scholarship by publishing in OA journals. Many funding agencies pay the publication fees that open access journals charge. Several OA journals published by BioMed Central and PLoS are now among the most highly cited journals.

Open Access Publishers and Resources
The Directory of Open Access Journals links to over 2,650 free, full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly journals, organized by subject.

These key publishers provide open access journals:
-
BioMed Central (BMC) publishes several open access journals. UC's membership with BMC reduces the author publication fee by 15% for UCSF authors. UCSF faculty authors have published more papers in BMC journals than any other UC campus as of 2005. View a list of papers.
-
Oxford University Press publishes two OA journals: Nucleic Acids Research and Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine.
-
Public Library of Science (PLoS) publishes peer-reviewed journals that are freely accessible online. UC's institutional membership entitles UCSF authors to a 20% reduction in the publication fee.

These publishers give authors the option to pay a fee to make their article immediately open access, though the publisher still retains copyright:
-
American Institute of Physics (AIP) - society publisher. Open access option on eight journals.
-
American Physiological Society (APS) - society publisher. Option for Physiological Genomics
-
Blackwell - commercial publisher
-
Oxford - commercial publisher
-
PNAS - society publisher. Open access surcharge is discounted by 25% for UC authors.
-

Many publishers hosted by HighWire Press offer free access to back-files for many biomedical journals.
