Purchase Research Software Through the Library

Research Software Licensing (RSL) offers discounted annual licenses for several popular data analysis software programs. UCSF faculty and staff are eligible to purchase licenses, and payment is made easy with recharge. All licenses include access to technical support plus any software upgrades that become available during the year.

Upcoming Classes on UCSF Chimera at Mission Bay

Beginning in late March, UCSF students and personnel can attend classes on UCSF Chimera, an extensible molecular modeling program developed and taught by the UCSF Computer Graphics Laboratory. The Chimera Series consists of seven hands-on classes which cover basic and advanced features of the software. View dates and class descriptions.

Reserve the Library Presentation Room

Need to practice your oral presentation skills for class, scholarship, or University business? Reserve the Library Presentation Room, located in Room 224 and available during library hours. Rehearse the pacing and coordination of software presentations by yourself or with small groups of up to 12 people. Set up the flexible seating to best suit your needs, and bring your laptop or borrow one from the Circulation Desk to polish your presentation skills.

NIH Public Access Policy Made Permanent

President Obama signed into law the 2009 Consolidated Appropriations Act on March 12, which includes a provision making the National Institutes’ of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy permanent. The NIH Revised Policy on Enhancing Public Access requires eligible NIH-funded researchers to deposit electronic copies of their peer-reviewed manuscripts into the National Library of Medicine’s online archive, PubMed Central (PMC). Full texts of the articles are made publicly available and searchable online in PMC no later than 12 months after publication in a journal.

Enhanced UC-eLinks Makes It Easier to Get Articles

UC-eLinks now links directly to full-text articles from library databases such as PubMed@UCSF. When full text is not available electronically, the UC-eLinks menu is displayed, allowing you to check for a print copy, request the article from another library, add a citation to a bibliography, or get help.

UC-eLinks is a service to help UCSF students and personnel get articles when searching California Digital Library (CDL) and UCSF Library databases such as PubMed@UCSF. View the UC-eLinks QuickGuide or contact us for more information.

Music in the Library: The Royals

The Royals are Katie Colpitts, lead guitarist, and Emily Palen, violinist, of the "blues influenced, hard rock inspired" band Dolorata. They will return to the Library to perform an acoustic set showcasing their musical talent and shared vision, featuring original works and modified pieces from Dolorata.

Smart Searching and Researching with Google: View the Video

In November Dan Russell—the “Uber Tech Lead for Search Quality and User Happiness” at Google—spoke to a full audience in the Lange Room of the UCSF Library on Parnassus. The H.M. Fishbon Memorial Library at Mt. Zion, and the San Francisco division of the Librarians Association of the University of California sponsored this event.

In his entertaining talk, “Google Search and Research,” Russell describes how Google seeks to improve their search interface and other products. In the last ten minutes of the hour-long presentation, he offers very handy tips for searching Google more efficiently. People interested in this topic are welcome to take the Google Search Tips & Tricks class offered by the UCSF Library.

New Legislation May Affect Access to NIH Research

The Fair Copyright in Research Act, sponsored in the US House of Representatives by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), seeks to modify US copyright law in a way that could have a profound impact on the future of the NIH Public Access Policy.

Ways to stay informed: follow the bill’s progress, and keep up with the news and blog coverage. If you have concerns about the ramifications of the Fair Copyright in Research Act, please contact your Congressional representative.

Your feedback will help us determine how to build the collection. The collection is constantly updated by adding new titles each month and returning ones that are no longer popular. Help us identify new titles to include and less popular titles to return.
