A new UK Open Access (OA) online archive for research papers has been launched. UK PubMed Central (UKPMC) is the equivalent of the US PubMed Central database, providing a stable, permanent, and free-to-access online digital archive of full-text, peer-reviewed research publications in the medical and life sciences.

The launch of UKPMC follows a recent decision by the UK's Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council which states that any peer-reviewed and published academic work the organizations fund must be made available for free.
